The games are over and the Olympic flag heads to the British Isles as London plans to host the next Olympic Summer Games in 2012. Wih so many young talents making history and/or showing promise for the next games, it is sure to be an exciting Olympics.< p>

Standing out among the rest,the home team, China won the most gold medals with 51, Next in line was the United States with 36.

The Chinese women were the major contributor to the Chinese collection of gold medals, winning twelve more than their closest rival USA. The Chinese men claimed 4 more than the American men. (USA, however, achieved a total medal count of 110 to China's 100.)

Russia claimed the third spot with 23 gold and 72 medals overall.

Great Britain won a total of 47 medals and 19 gold.

Germany 16 gold / 41 total; Australia 14 gold / 46 total; Japan 13 gold / 21 total.

To put it into perspective though, Jamaica who fielded 53 athletes won 6 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze and Thailand who fielded only 51 Olympic athletes came away from the Olympics with 2 gold medals and two silver.
