Concise is Nice: 230 Words on Knocked Up
posted February 23, 2008 - 10:02pmOne of the biggest box office hits of 2007 came in the form of a romantic comedy disguised as a guy flick. Director Judd Apatow cleverly concealed his tale of boy-meets-girl; boy-loses-girl; boy-gets-girl-back under a layer of crude language and stereotypical male antics. And it worked like a charm.
Starring Katherine Heigel and Seth Rogen as the protagonists, Knocked Up centers on the accidental impregnation of Alison by Ben after what was supposed to be a one night stand. Alison’s pregnancy could not come at a worse time for her-she was recently promoted to anchor on E! News, and fears the loss of her job if news should get out-which it eventually and inevitably does. Ben’s pothead slacker tendencies do not bode any better for his parenting potential.
The film opened at number two June 1st, 2007, but after two weeks in theaters, it quickly moved into first place for four consecutive weeks. It was named one of the ten best films of the year by both Rolling Stone and the American Film Institute. It also raked in several award nominations, most notably a People’s Choice Award for Best Comedy, and four Teen Choice Awards.
A distinguishing feature of Knocked Up is the abundance of celebrity cameos. Ryan Seacrest, Steve Carell, Jessica Alba and Eva Mendes are just a few of the stars who made appearances in various capacities.
