The Connection Between Fibromyalgia and Auto Accidents

Fibromyalgia is a severe and painful condition, that affects two to four percent of the population. Some of the common symptoms of fibromyalgia are extreme fatigue, chronic pain in the muscles, stiffness in the morning, and waking up without feeling refreshed.

There are several problems and side effects related to fibromyalgia, such as troubles with concentration and memory, lightheadedness, headaches, abdominal cramping, and numbness. Individuals with fibromyalgia also feel acute pain when pressure is put on the "trigger points" linked with this disorder. This is a significant distinction between fibromyalgia and other similar conditions.

So now you know a little about fibromyalgia, but you still do not know the most important question-how does one get fibromyalgia? Is it hereditary? Can it be passed from person to person? Is it contagious? However, do not be worried that you are going to be mysteriously stricken by this disease. Although uncertain of the precise cause, physicians have discovered a direct link between fibromyalgia and auto accidents.

Are Automobile Accidents To Blame for Fibromyalgia?

Physicians are still uncertain about what precisely causes fibromyalgia. Nevertheless, they do recognize that this condition is not something that can be transmitted from person to person. They have determined that women with a family member who has already been diagnosed with fibromyalgia are more likely to get the condition themselves.

Physicians have determined, one of the potential causes of this condition, is linked to trauma that occurs after an illness or injury, an operation, or an automobile accident. Therefore, it is believed that fibromyalgia and auto accidents are connected.

In a five year study conducted from 1990 to 1995, the records of two thousand fibromyalgia patients were examined. Of these two thousand people, sixty-five percent of the instances were due to a traumatic incident. Of this percentage, fifty-two percent suffer from fibromyalgia because of an automobile accident.

This establishes the direct connection between fibromyalgia and auto accidents. Fibromyalgia and auto accidents are more than likely linked together because of the possibility of neck and shoulder injuries during an automobile accident.

Other Theories of Fibromyalgia and Auto Accidents

Fibromyalgia and auto accidents are not the sole reason for the condition. There has been several additional instances of fibromyalgia that have not occurred after trauma. Several physicians think that fibromyalgia is related to neurohumoral dysfunction, or from too much stress and tension. Yet others believe that fibromyalgia is caused by emotional, physical, or sexual abuse that happened during childhood.
