Could There Be Room For Hope In the Middle East?
posted June 28, 2007 - 6:22pmAs one who studies world events and geo-political trends, I have been noticing developments in the Middle East which possibly could have a positive outcome in the near future. I speak of Iran, perhaps the most recalcitrant nation today, which is having considerable internal turmoil. For years we have heard
reports of large-scale demonstrations against the government’s ultra-radical restrictions. It is a fact that 70% of the populace is under 30 years old and they want the same privileges as young people the world over enjoy. Reports of emerging that the demonstrations continue and are on the increase. We also know that their infrastructure is in terrible shape so much so that even though they are literally swimming in oil they have become a gasoline importer because their own refineries are shuttered or offline more than they are online. This is resulting in gas lines (remember them from the ‘70’s?) and actual fire bombings of gas stations in protest.
Pragmatic mullahs and others in the government are very nervous about their loose cannon of a leader and are acting in a obstructive manner as a matter of damage control while other are fomenting insurrection. I have suspected (this isn’t much of a risky supposition) that we have had people on the ground there working to undermine the Iranian government. We further know that as Marshall MacLuhan perfectly predicted that accessibility to information would bring down Communism and despotism in general, that this same access to information will also feed the thirst for freedom of the Iranian population.
We can only hope that this will lead to a collapse of this rogue government near term. If it does then the world will become a much more stable place and will further to isolate the other great rogue state of North Korea. At such time no doubt it too will collapse because it will have no more collaborators.
