Countdown to NYC - 14 days 'till departure to the money pit
posted December 2, 2006 - 1:40pmThis week has been topsy-turvy. My roommates are moving into a new place, I’m packing for NYC and I’m training the guy that is taking over my job. After a late night of packing on Wednesday, I got up Thursday morning and picked Matt – the new guy – up from LAX. My car was loaded down with every possible thing I could fit into it. Matt, who is almost as tall as my brother was unfortunately forced to sit sucking his knees in the front seat. I had the awesome experience of the ironing board that basically blocks the driver’s side door and forces me to squeeze into the front seat backwards and then flip myself around. Fun times – welcome to LA Matt! So I spend the day tooling around LA with Matt and training him on the ins and outs of my job. Then I get home to an empty apartment. I get my last few things together, sleep in my bed (the only thing left) and wake up the next day. I break down the bed and head out for another day with Matt.
Last night was the first night at the new apartment. I called Sam for directions after dropping Matt of at his hotel. This morning I couldn’t even find shampoo or iron my clothes but I’m thankful just for the place to stay for the next two weeks. Sam has been really great about the whole thing – a huge help and Mandy (his girlfriend) has been awesome as well.
I hijacked some internet last night as I sat on the unsheeted bed and did some NYC apartment hunting with Kevin. I’m really scared. It’s going to cost a fortune. Here I was sitting in a $1400 a month – 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, living room, dining room, huge closets, etc apartment in LA and looking at a $3200 500 sq foot studio in Chelsea. I’m really worried. I mean my rent is going to quadruple between here and the big apple. Kevin’s been super supportive about the whole thing and I’m pretty confident we’re going to be fine, but I can’t help but think about the huge house I could own for that amount of money. But hey, you’re only young once and what could be better than experiencing NYC with the one you love!? I’m ready for the adventure even if my wallet isn’t.
