Court: Paper Money Discriminates
Court: Paper Money Discriminates
A federal appeals court ruled today that paper money discriminates against the blind, who are unable to discern any difference between different denominations of currency. This ruling upholds a lower court's 2006 ruling that had the same finding. Suggestions for making the bills blind-accessible range from making different sizes to printing them with raised markings, like Braille.
The Treasury Department has made several changes to currency in the last few years and the court found that adding some elements to aid the blind would be relatively inexpensive. More than 100 countries vary the sizes of their bills, and while the court has been arguing this case some changes benefiting the visually impaired have been adopted. The five dollar bill introduced in March with the purple '5' was designed to make the number easier to see for those with visual impairment.
