Craigslist Murders: ABC

Craigslist Murders: ABC

According to ABC, "Police arrested a man (22-year-old Philip Markoff) and charged him with killing a woman WHO ADVERTISED MASSEUSE SERVICES ON CRAIGSLIST". In other words, this is yet another case involving prostitutes, only this time, they are advertising on Craigslist.

The details of the crime are gruesome. According to ABC, "A series of images show the suspect inside the Holiday Inn Express Hotel last Thursday evening, the scene of an attempted robbery of a woman. The man in the pictures taken in the hotel closely resembles the man seen in a surveillance camera photo that was released shortly after Brisman was found dead in a Boston hotel just days earlier. Detectives also have a match among plastic zip-tie cuffs USED TO BIND ALL THREE WOMEN".

So what are people saying about this latest act of violence? According to Boston Police Department spokeswoman Elaine Driscooll, "Detectives are AGGRESSIVELY pursuing a number of promising leads".

According to former FBI agent and ABC News contributor, "By some sources, it is one of the leading avenues to promote prostitution BECAUSE IT IS SO EASY. You place an ad (and) you say 'Come to Hotel X at a time and a date' and a service is provided. IT IS REALLY AN IDEAL AVENUE FOR CRIMINALS". Anyone can look through Craigslist and look for or advertise sex. All that's necessary is an internet connection and the ability to say 'Yes I do' when someone is selling his/her body.

According to Gay Talese, author of "Thy Neighbor's Wife", "It's an instant connection, it's instant sex (and) it's sometimes instantaneously a tragic situation. The reason it's definitely bigger is because any sense of caution or guilt associated with sexual interchange of a commercial nature is eliminated now".

The final intriguing question that we can raise is: what caused/drove this person to kill? According to ABC, "Markoff is a Boston University medical student WHO WAS ENGAGED TO GET MARRIED". This revelation makes this incident all the more perplexing. If Markoff was engaged to be married, why did he order the services of a masseuse? And if he wanted the services of a masseuse, why did he kill her? The bottom line is: prostitutes who sell their bodies, either on street corners or online make themselves vulnerable to attack, rape and murder.
