cruise ship history - Queen Elizabeth 2
posted September 7, 2006 - 12:06pmI was hoping that I could've located some exotic pirates tales or something, but there was nothing of this sort. so I relay to you the tales that I did happen to run across.
At the christening of the Q. E. 2, it took three attempts to break the champagne bottle. Although many people believe that the ship was named after Queen Elizabeth the second, it was not. This is actually the second ship that she named , hence it is referred to as the Q. E. 2. Her highness queen Elizabeth the second is referred to as Q. E. II.
On September twenty, 1967, the ship was launched by Queen Elizabeth II, and made its maiden voyage to new York two years later. In January of 1971 while cruising the Caribbean, the captain received an SOS from the Antilles , a French ocean liner. Apparently it had run aground and fuel oil was leaking into the ship. A fire started and the passengers were boarded onto the Q. E. two during the night. The Antilles sank the next day .
The next year while traveling from New York to Southampton the captain received a bomb threat. Although it turned out to be a hoax the person who made the threat was arrested by the FBI.
Ten years later in 1982, the Q. E. 2 carried 3,000 troops to the south Atlantic to take part in the Falkland islands war.
Although she conjures up the image of the glamour and romance of an ocean liner at sea, the truth is she still has and old fashioned manual sewage system. This means when she docks into port , a fleet of sewage trucks have to manually pump her out. many of her guests check into nearby hotels because they cannot stand the stench. She has been dubbed the "stink ship". although she has a self contained and sealed sanitation system and sewage disposal plants on board, though systems must wait until she docks to be emptied.
After striking and uncharted object in 1992, she was grounded. Millions of dollars in profit were lost while waiting for her to be repaired.
In 1994 the owners of the cruise ship had to pay out over 7.5 million pounds to passengers as a refund. As a result of sailing before renovations could be completed, the cruise of December 1994 is known as "the cruise to hell". Passengers complained of poor accommodations including exploding toilets and debris strewn decks.
In 1995 Southampton officials inspected the cruise ships Queens grill restaurant. They threatened to take legal action if steps were not taken to clean up the food hygiene.
So much for the romance.
