Cuil.com - An Amazing new search engine created by ex-google engineers
posted July 28, 2008 - 5:05amThere Is a really amazing new searchengine that is being brought to us by some ex-google engineers. It's called Cuil. As in, it is is so cuil to search with. It boasts a search index of 120 billion web pages. It is believed that this is three times the size of google. Instead of trying to mimic and mock google's search engine the makers of cuil decided that they would abandon google's method of ranking the quantity and quality of links to websites. Instead, according to the creator of the new Cuil, Mr. Patterson says that Cuil now drills into the actual content of the page. How Cuil is that. The results are displayed horizontally as well. That's cuil as well. Furthermore, photos are also spread and displayed horizontally. There is also the addition of sidebars so that one can even explore in greater detail the information that is being presented to them on each site. Their real marketing ploys and the way that they really hope to beat out google's search engine is by not retaining customers' information. That is good news for people concerned about having their personal user information retained. It also pledges not to keep search histories on you or search patters or surfing behavior. Cuil is in a long list of challengers to google and those challengers haven't always been so successful. Look at what happened to ask jeeves and snap and vivisimo, and mahalo, and powerset. Wow i'm out of breath just saying all those. Even microsoft and yahoo have been losing ground to google despite the millions of dollars that they have to share. So the real question is that whether or not a better search engine can win out on its very own merits. In other words, is having a great product good enough in this day and age. And if it is how quickly and where will it spread. Or will it be bought up and shelved like so many good quality competing products usually are when they are confroned with a serious competitor.
