Dangers of rodent infestation
posted May 4, 2008 - 9:09pmBesides scaring you to death when you run across one in the middle of the night, mice and rats can pose a serious threat to your property and to the health of your family and your animals or pets. Once rodents become established on your property either inside or outside or both, they breed very quickly and it becomes even more difficult to eliminate them.
Rats and mice are very destructive and while this may cause a lot of expense when you have to replace or repair cabinetry and wood work or furniture he can also become very dangerous. Mice love to chew everything in sight. Much of their damage that they are doing may be out of your sight and inside your walls. Mice love to gnaw on insulation and wiring. Faulty electrical wiring caused by rodents has produced many house fires. The damage to your home’s insulation can cost thousands of dollars worth of damage and can also be a fire hazard. Since the term pack rat came from rodents the term is definitely true. Rodents love to collect items that they use as nesting materials such as newspapers or magazines, insulation and anything else they can get their little paws on. They take these materials and store them somewhere else in your home in order to use later. They may clog your plumbing or store these materials in an area of your home where it will become another fire hazard.
Murine Typhus Fever or simply Typhus is spread by the bites of fleas that have fed off of rodents. This infectious disease shows itself with a rash and other symptoms include headache, backache, a high fever that may last up to two weeks, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Treatment for typhus fever includes antibiotics and over 98% of people afflicted will recover. 10% to 60% of people who do not go on antibiotic treatment will not survive.
Q Fever is in another disease caused by rodents worldwide. This disease is contracted by the inhalation of dust that has been contaminated by the birthing tissues and placenta of infected rats and mice. This is a very infectious disease for humans as a single particle in the air can cause infection if inhaled. A person infected will develop flu-like symptoms, which may turn into complications such as pneumonia or even an infection in the lining of the heart. Just as with typhus, the preferred course of treatment is antibiotics and rest. Prognosis is good but it is a very resistant disease and may take up to five weeks of antibiotics to treat.
In order to avoid any chance of contracting these diseases it is imperative that you fully clean and disinfect every surface in your home where rodents may have come in contact. Because many of the diseases can be transferred onto surfaces through their urine or feces, their saliva or the bottoms of their paws, it is very important that every conceivable area be disinfected with either a professional strength disinfectant or a bleach and water solution. Never handle live or deceased rodents with your bare hands and even consider wearing a dust mask when cleaning areas that may have been infested. Your health and the health of your family could depend on it.
