A Dark New Year's Eve

A Dark New Year's Eve

A dark shadow looms over India as the year 2008 nears its end. Sadness and grief grips us all over those who lost their lives, not only in the Mumbai terror attacks recently, but all the other similar attacks that rocked the nation this year killing innocent people.

The situation in India is very tense after the very brutal and cold blooded open attack by the terrorist in Mumbai. People have suddenly realized their vulnerability and the fact that nobody is safe anymore. You may be rich, poor, Hindu, Muslim, or a Christian, it doesn't matter. You are vulnerable.

There have been further threats of possible attacks during New Year's celebrations in Goa, Mumbai and many other places. So, nobody wants to take a chance now. Better safe than sorry! As a result all the big hotels have canceled all their New Year's Programs. No Bipasha Basu, Rakhi Sawant, Katrina Kaif or Mallika Sherawat performances this year. The hotels, of course are suffering huge losses on account of these cancellations.

There is definitely a change this year. Everything is a low key affair. No blaring music, lights, fireworks etc. The place where I stay used to be lit up from one end of the street to the other during Christmas and New Years every year. All the houses too would be lit up right from Diwali onwards till New Year's celebrations before they were taken down. But, this year there are no lights. The houses too are not lit up. No Christmas stars to be seen in the verandas or balconies.

It's sad. This is a Dark New Year's Eve! What will the New Year be like for India and its people? Will there be a war? That is the question that is uppermost on everybody's mind right now. Or, maybe everything will die down as usual. The politicians will see to that. They will shift all the focus to the elections and then maybe we will just be where we always were: More attacks, more people die, and life will go on......

Safe India!

In my earlier days I used to feel very safe anywhere in India, specially when I had to travel alone, at any time of the day or night. Mumbai, earlier known as Bombay was also considered to be one of the most safest cities in India. But, alas, today India is not safe anywhere. I think twice about making any plans to go anywhere, be it for a movie to a multplex, eating out, shopping at a mall, or traveling by train or air to any destination. What's worse still is that we don't feel safe even when we see cops all around us. I fear the cops and feel like running away miles from any one of them. Why is that? Because, cops have been known to harass the civilian population and demand bribes for any small offense that they claim that you have committed! They are a prejudiced lot and help only those people who fill their pockets! Yes, it's sad. God help you if you have an accident with a truck. Because then the local police may not even register your case, and will do all to help the truck driver instead who has probably been bribing him all these years (paying "Hafta"). That's what happened to us when we had met with an accident last year in January. We had to literally force the Police to register the case. The police force in India need to win the hearts and confidence of the people desperately. They need to make us "feel" safe and encourage the people to come forward and report crime wherever and in whatever form it occurs. I do hope India becomes safe once again! India is a very beautiful country with even more beautiful people who are simple, honest and sincere. Let's help keep it that way! Thanks for your wishes, MJ Dakota.

The New Year is Here

The dark sad night of no lights and celebrations is over. Now it IS the New Year and it is time to make it the way you want it. It is difficult when such tragedies happen as I too remember 9/11. The disbelief, shock and sadness are just so "wow". I hope that this New Year brings more peace and understanding for the sides in conflict. May the people of India be safe, happy and prosper. I dare ya...c'mon you know you want to...Smile! MJ

I plan to

switch on all the lights that I had put out for Diwali, (which are still there), tonight. Although we are not really doing anything else to celebrate the New Year's this time, the lights will indicate that we do look forward to peace and better governance in the coming year. It is also an indication to our "friendly" neighbors that we will not be cowed down so easily, that we do know how to fight back, if and when we are pushed to the wall. So watch out. The politicians may be too cowardly to take appropriate steps to put you in your place, but try and attack us (the people) again and see if you are not beaten to pulp with our bare hands! Thanks taprial and Jdubhub for your comments. And Yes! Wish every body else a Very Happy New Year 2009! CHEERS!

Life goes on...

This sounds just like the U.S. just after 9/11. People were still reeling from the attacks and loss of life and there was both the uncertainty and the eventual opportunistic invasions by the government, which some saw as the reason the attacks happened. I really feel for the people of India right now because it is difficult to be emotionally drained from the attacks and still be vigilant over what government officials may be doing to take advantage of the situation. Fully Concur..

Although I really feel that people should get on with it. If we subdue ourselves, the enemy would have won. If people are angry with the politicians, bureaucrats, etc they should stop voting and throw them out, stop paying taxes or whatever. Celebration of life is totally personal. We should not give up on that. Cheers and have a happy new year. Bare Essentials
