Dating in the Work Place

Dating in the Work Place

The workplace is a great place to meet someone. You automatically have something in common, a thread to work with and the fact that you mutually hate what you do and the people you work for on the same level is perfect for those awkward first days eating dinner together. It's an in. But of course, it's an out too. Once the first few hours of swapping complaints you have to dive into real conversation.

And so, if you decide to go down the road of workplace dating there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

1. Date out of department- If you work together, it's guaranteed you'll drive the other one nuts in a matter of days. The soaring love you feel will quickly turn into a searing pain as blood drips out of your ears from being around them 22 hours a day.

2. Talk to them outside of work first- You won't learn a thing about them if you just talk at work. I've seen the angriest, meanest, bitchiest of work loathing machines turn all sweet and gooey after they clock out. And vice versa.

3. Ask around, but don't go sleuthing- It's really easy to ask around from your coworkers. A built in network of spies. Don't do it. They'll find out. Anger will ensue.

4. Don't announce it to everyone off the bat (privacy is best)- Quite the opposite, just don't tell anyone, unless you get really serious. The last thing you want is your entire workplace winking and nodding whenever you walk by and making stupid inuendos with their fingers.

5. Don't date your boss- duh.

The Way It OUGHTA Be!

Dating should start in the workplace: Re.#1: It's slightly more-stressful, but you CAN date inside-the-department if you remember to keep work "about work" (think Roz and Frasier). Re.#2: that keeps you with Re.#1 Re.#3: don't even 'ask around' about stuff that'd make the other angry! Re.#4: Don't announce it until you send the office invitations! Re.#5: DO date the boss, if the boss asks outside work [keeping in mind the cardinal rule (above).] Write with Love ... That's me
