Day 12 - 15 ; Why Leave San Francisco

9-24-08

We enter days 12 through 15 of the 'epic' road trip of Xomba founder Nick Veneris and his girlfriend as they travel from Jacksonville, Florida to San Francisco, California.

Ok, so I have fallen behind in the blogs. Well, between having fun and dealing with a few bugs with Xomba how can you blame me?

We've had lots and lots of fun over the last couple of weeks and the highlight of the trip was San Fran. The final big stop. After leaving San Diego we stopped by the Randolph Hearst Castle for a quick tour and to break up a 9-10 hour drive to San Fran.

The castle was amazing. There are 4 different tours and we took the one that is recommended for your first tour. Situated on top of a mountain in a remote area of the Pacific Coast one can easily see why Hearst would pick this location. Check out some pics below:

We couldn't use the flash inside the castle so the pics came out dark or not visible.

After leaving the castle and staying the night in a hotel out in the middle of nowhere we headed to San Francisco in the morning.

The drive up the Pacific coast can be long, but breathtaking. It is quite different from the flat beach we're used to seeing on the east coast.

Plus, we got to see some wild Elephant Seals.

San Francisco is pretty dense. Everything is very stacked on top of one another making each block a very unique location. Two words "urban exploration", with 4-6 restaurants on every block and numerous bars and shops you could easily do a year in San Francisco and not be bored.

Some suggestions if visiting San Fran:

1. Get a hotel in the city. Your car is useless here. Trust me I was terrified driving here and parking is a nightmare.

2. Get ready to walk. Bring a comfortable pair of shoes.

3. Find the "Bushman" at the Fisherman's Wharf. 2nd best thing to watch. You'll know when you find him

4. Goto Chinatown. The best thing we did there. (I could not find Gizmo)

We could have moved here and been perfectly happy. However, 2 bedrooms are around 2k-3k per month.

SF! Brought back some long forgotten memories...

I grew up in the City of San Francisco, and what a grand place it was to grow up. My grandmother's house was one block west and one block south of the corner of Haight and Ashbury, and let me tell you, Haight-Ashbury was in full swing in the Summer of '67. I was only 16. In 1968, I bought a brand new VW Beetle, Red, ($1,818.00, out the showroom door), with all the extra accessories -- mag wheels, duel exhaust, and an AM-8 track tape deck. Not knowing anything about how to drive a clutch my Mom's friend took me to the top of California Street, just above where it crosses Grant (Chinatown) Street. California Street is on steep drop from the "top of the mark," to the Ferry Building on the bay side. By the time I got down by the Ferry Building, I had begun to master the clutch. The California Street Cable Car Line crawls up and down California Street. And, by, the way, I use to ride the Cable cars to school. It was 15 cents to ride back then. How much is it now? I have lots of great adventures in my first 22 years. Like getting my first connection to buy firecrackers, by the case, but, those stories are for another time. And, listen, Nick, thank you for calling San Francisco, San Fran and not Frisco, that name was created by the folks in "southern" California, never liked it and no one else liked it either. San Francisco has class and L.A., well, they have lots of people... Hey, glad you got home safe, and, by, the, way, what route did you take out of town?? Welcome Home!

Interesting

This has been a very interesting read (all your blogs, I mean) and the whole road trip. Looking forward to hear what happened in Las Vegas. The pics were truly great.

Great

photos. The seals are incredible! It really appears to be an epic trip. My parents had been there a few months back and got back some grand cam shots - yes the Pacific coast is breathtaking! Latest Football News At http://www.plainfooty.blogspot.com/ My writings here My profile here My Xomba blog
