Day 7 & 8: Grand Canyon and Sedona

9-15-08

We enter day 6 of the 'epic' road trip of Xomba founder Nick Veneris and his girlfriend as they travel from Jacksonville, Florida to San Francisco, California.

The last two days have been excellent. First, I'll start with Sunday where we spent the day at the South Ridge of the Grand Canyon.

The park was pretty full mostly tourists from France and England. Here are some pictures below then I'll share my thoughts.

That last picture is the river below. Yes, it looks small, but trust me looks can be deceiving. We just walked around the rim of the canyon. Hiking to the river is about 6 hours down. So, if you go down then you stay down for a few days. There you can ride the rapids and such. We didn't have time for that unfortunately, maybe another vacation.

The Grand Canyon looks just like it does in the movies. Not surprising, but breathtaking. If you do anything in the southwest goto the Grand Canyon, but be prepared for crowds. We are off season so I can only imagine how packed it is during the summer.

After spending the day at the canyon we headed out to Sedona about 2 hours away. Sedona, Az looks like the planet Mars. It is completely red. Red dirt, red rocks and red buildings. We got to spend 2 days here and we are leaving in the morning for San Diego, but that's tomorrow's story.

Sedona is a wonderful artist community. Reminds me of St. Augustine, Florida. Tons of trails here. You could spend a month here hiking alone. We went on two hikes today. The first one was called the Bed Rock Trail. About a 3 mile one-way hike by a beautiful rock sculpture. We apent about an hour and a half and did most of the trail before we were dead tired. This is the desert so it was getting hot, I'm talking 107 in the sun. Luckily, it was dry so you don't sweat as bad. We took a solid 3 hour lunch break after this one. Honestly, we pushed ourselves a little too hard. Pictures below.

Around 3pm we hiked the West Fork Trail in Oak Creek. A 11 mile one-way trail that is in the opposite side of Sedona. It is a creek that runs from the mountains through a valley like canyon. This is a wooded trail around 5,000 feet elevation and much much cooler (temp wise). We hiked about 2:30 hours or so round trip, obviously not doing 11 miles.

Once the sun got behind the mountain the temp went from cool to chilly, but this wasn't sunset just that the sun is what makes things hot here. We had to cross about 8 streams and there was a good size group of people all hiking, but once we got about an hour in there were only a couple of us.

The trail was amazing and reminded me of an Indiana Jones movie. Pictures below.

As the sun set here in Sedona I snapped one final picture from a cafe that we were devouring to much Ice Cream at. I'll leave you with that image and the hope that we'll make it back here one day.

Pictures don't do it justice.

I have to disagree with you it is more spectacular in person than in the movies. I've been many times to the Grand Canyon, and Sedona, but I have never hiked down there. I'm afraid of heights! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Everyone should see Oak Creek Canyon, and the Grand Canyon at least once!

Enjoyed your pictures but only tourist enjoy taking pictures of cacti. I had to chuckle at that one! Really I'm sick of looking at cactus!

I've been behind a tourist driving 2 miles per hour while he takes a picture of some cactus somewhere.

The dirt really is red, and very fine. It takes a week to wash it out of your clothes, and shoes.

So powerful are the thoughts of Nick, they effect your nasal glands with their adoption of the dry southwestern landscape! Or! ... lol ---Uncle MythMan, who KNOWS you're as awesome as the 2009 Collection (in your special way), yet needs to hear *you*! Join Here!(PalinVP`09)

Awesome. Reminds a Man What He's Made Of.

The "snips and snails and puppy-dog tails" might grow to 'chunk and Krakens as the Dragon Awakens' lol, but it's always good to be comfortable with the dust (from which you were borne). ---Uncle MythMan, who KNOWS you're as awesome as the 2009 Collection (in your special way), yet needs to hear *you*! Nice pictures - REAL NICE PICTURES!

I love your pictures. I have copies of them, now, too... You drive safely, and both of you have a safe journey. And, since you're headed home, well, you're going to have to cross the Sierra Nevada mountains somewhere -- so, where's it going to be??

Roaring Camp! Gosh, that brings back some memories...

I hadn't heard that name since I was a little boy (8 y.o -'59) I went there with my dear mom and grandma, so, many, many, years ago, and walked around, and through, some of the grand BIG TREES of California. I, thanks to your post, was able to picture my mom reaching down on the ground, inside one of the big trees, and whether it was the actual hair clip, lost by my mom in the 1940's on an earlier visit to Roaring Camp, she certainly believed it. And I remember her glee when she found it. I had forgot all about that day until I saw the word Roaring Camp. Thanks for jogging my memory. If only in thought, it was fun to be with her for a moment. She's been gone 23 years. Thank you. _______________ It does matter what you believe, but, what you believe does not matter if you do not act upon your beliefs. you can not vote on the truth --Pope John Paul II, 1995

Homesick

LOL, thanks for the offer. We're getting a little homesick and after San Fran we'll be heading home Tuesday.

Nice

We loved the Hearst Castle and did tour #1.... Damn it gets cold here at night. Lower 60's really?!?!?! Make me put on a jacket. San Luis seemed like a nice quaint town while driving through it. I'm tired of going up and down mountains though. :)

Gorgeous Pictures

Thanks, Nick for taking us on the trip with you. Keep the pictures coming.

Hearst Castle is right in my backyard (though not literally)

I live in San Luis Obispo, which is about an hour to hour-and-a-half south of Hearst Castle in San Simeon. If you haven't been there before, I highly recommend Tour #1, which is the basic tour. You get a good overview of the castle and grounds, plus free admission to the IMAX movie about the Hearst Castle at their theater. Fortunately, they have trams that take you from the parking lot/visitors' center up to the castle grounds. When you get there, you'll see what I mean. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?
