Deborah Curling Files Lawsuit Against Bob Barker
posted October 5, 2007 - 1:02pmDeborah Curling Files Lawsuit Against Bob Barker
A former employee of the Price is Right, Deborah Curling, filed a wrongful termination lawsuit Thursday against retired host Bob Barker, CBS, and FremantleMedia North America. Deborah Curling claims that she was forced to quit her long time job after she chose to testify on behalf of an ex-colleague who was suing Barker.
Curling’s complaint, which was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court, accuses Bob Barker of making it his life mission to destroy the livelihood of any person who contradicted him or did not do what Barker ordered to be done; whether Barker’s request was legal or not, it should still be done says Debora Curling.
CBS, was very much aware of Bob Barker’s value to their network; therefore, according to Curling, “they [CBS] did absolutely nothing" to stop Barker’s behavior and ridiculous requests. CBS even went as far as paying Barker’s legal fees, according to the most current lawsuit. FremantleMedia was "fully aware of…Barker's wrongdoings," which included sexual harassment and ongoing racial discrimination.
Deborah Curling’s complaint provides numerous examples of litigation, which has, plague the show over the past 15 years. Such legal action includes the 1994 sexual harassment lawsuit filed by model Diane Parkinson against Barker, as well as the Emmy winner's 1995 defamation suit against another of "Barker's Beauties," Holly Hallstrom, who claimed that Barker fired her because she appeared to have gained weight.
Five women were ordered to testify in the Hallstrom case; after each of the witnesses statements clearly supported Hallstrom's point of view, Barker hd no other choice but to drop his suit in September of 2000, this according to Deborah Curling's current lawsuit.
Coincidentally, about a month after the 5 women testified, each was fired.
Deborah Curling alleges, she was aggressively targeted after she testified for Linda Riegert, who initially was one of the women who claimed to have overheard Barker telling Hallstrom to drop some weight; Riegert, a former production assistant, sued Barker for wrongful termination.
Deborah Curling makes no mistake when she confidently states that Barker destroyed those employees' lives through the wrongful firings of each, as well as wearing each woman down through what seemed to be endless litigation.
Curling, who is black, says that after she chose to take the stand in Riegert’s defense, Curling then became the object of racial bias in the workplace and was ultimately moved from the social environment of the Green Room to a secluded backstage area. According to Curling, CBS officials requested that Curling sign "hush clause," while continuing to ignore her ongoing complaints about the newly assigned working conditions.
Deborah Curling who is proud of the 24 years she devoted to Price is Right, also says that the show's director and producers habitually made reproachful remarks about Jews, as well as blacks in her presence and liberally tossed around the “N-word.”
In addition to Curling’s wrongful termination allegation, which is based on retaliation, Deborah Curling also alleges a hostile work atmosphere and deliberate infliction of emotional distress.
Although Deborah Curling’s damage request is “unspecified”, one thing is certain: The price will have to be right to settle this latest suit.
