December 12, 2012: Mayan Calendar says End of the World -- Are you Kidding Me?
posted July 7, 2008 - 12:34amOk, so by now everyone and their mothers have heard about December 12, 2012, which supposedly is when the Mayans predicted the apocalypse of our world. And I'll admit, I too am scared for the world, but not because of this apocalypse. I'm scared because our world is filled with morons who will believe in this nonsense.
In case you haven't heard, all of these dooms day cults are claiming that since the Mayan "long count" calender ends on this day, the world must be coming to an end. What all of these morons fail to realize is that the Mayans never even allude to the end of their calender signifying the end of the world. In fact, the Mayans simply saw their calender as ending on this date but then starting over without any major catastrophes.
Some people say that, regardless of the Mayans, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in 26000 years and thus, death to all is imminent. To the believers of this, might I point out that Earth has been around for far longer than 26000 years, and nothing suggests anything bad happened 26000 years ago the last time this happened.
The first time I heard about it, it was kind of cool and interesting, but hearing every couple days on the radio how some person quit there job to prepare for the apocalypse is really starting to grind my gears. Remember Y2K? OMG!! The computers are going to explode and all the world's debts will be erased. There will be mass chaos. What happened there? Oh, that's right. Everything continued on as normal. Case and point.
