December is a Time for Reflection

December is a Time for Reflection

When you think of December, what do you think of? Christmas, Hanukkah, Eid, Kwanzah, or even a more generic "holiday season". Kids getting a couple of weeks off of school. Traveling to see relatives, which may mean a long car trip or long lines at the airport. Shopping, lots of shopping.

Yes, those are all fine and good and, well, to be expected.

What do I think about in December? I think about the year past. You see, for me, December is a time for reflection.

For most of us, especially those of us with children, it is very easy to get so caught up in the day-to-day details that we lose track of time. How many times have you found yourself saying, "Wow, I can't believe this month is almost over." Or "I can't believe we're halfway done with the year!"

So, in the interest of "checking in" with my goals and life plan, I need to find time to take a look at everything that happened over the past year. What better time than December? Things typically slow down in the world while people celebrate, so it gives us the perfect opportunity to pause and ponder.

Another reason I look to December to reflect is January is only days away and that is not only the beginning of the new year, it is also a psychological clean slate and fresh start. While many people are making half-hearted New Year's Resolutions, I am making real goals based on the past year's accomplishments and what I plan on accomplishing in the coming months.

For those of you who journal, like me, this is also a good opportunity to go back and skim over what you have written. Even if you write to vent, it is educational to see how far you've come in the past year to help you realize that you are making progress in your life.

Taking time to stop and smell the roses in life can only happen if you actually take time to stop. What better time than December?

Reflection

SK December is indeed a time for reflection. As a writer we need to evaluate where we stand. We must formulate our goals by making an honest retrospection. If we focus on our positives then that will motivate us to do more better in the year ahead. But,then we should not also hide our weaknesses. For my posts visit www.xomba.com/user/sanjay

Thanks, kukku!

Merry Christmas to you, too. I've been doing my best to stay outside of the insanity that has become "normal" this time of year, not that I was ever one for going along with the whole thing. Thanks for your comment! JOIN US IN TOASTING YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS!

Cool December...

Yes, jdub, its time to stop along and smell those roses. December month psychologically also slows one down what with Christmas followed by New Year festivities and to top it all its pretty cold out too in most places. One does feels like putting up their feet and watching the world go by. And wish you a Merry Christmas and great time ahead. DO the Write Thing & Get Paid Here

You're Welcome

I'm glad I could help, but when I said change your title, I meant post a xomblurb try it out 3 or 4 times, delete it, and then try again with a different title. If you change your title now your URL will stay with the old title, and confuse people. I would probably leave the old ones the way they are, and just start fresh! Merry Christmas!

Good to know

I didn't know how much the Google spider tracked, but it's interesting that even tracking cookies from other websites have an effect on it. I may go back and change some things. Then, again, I'll have to see. Lots of things happening with me and my family right now for the holidays, so it may be the end of the month before I even get to it. We'll see. Thanks for your comment!

JD it's the Side Bars

The ads are not only influenced by what you wrote, but by the side bar, i.e. Highest Rated, Recent Comments, Recent Xombytes, Recent Xomblurbs, etc. Even the comments at the end. So next time you notice something strange pop up on your own Xomblurbs, Xombytes look at the side bars. Also, I noticed that if I view my own xomblurb say 3 times, or even edit it, appropriate Adsense ads will start popping up, and the antacids or whatever ads will go away!! Also I notice if I say was looking at other websites for say Women's Issues, and I go back to Xomba those ads will follow me there, even if I'm writing about say Joe Biden's new puppy. Also, Reflux and Reflection both start with Refl so that's another reason why the Adsense crawler is attuned to this. Change your title, and a few words see different ads. I experiment a little with editing until I get the ads that I want. It's not that Adsense is not tuned in; it's too tuned in.

guess I'm more attuned to the vernal equinox

and, as Andy Rooney commented the other day, January 1st is just the day we change our calendars. But, whatever boils your rutabagas. . . Personally I think the Blagojevich mess will eventually die a merciful death, but not before desperate and dispirited right wingers do their best to use it to paint Obama black (so to speak). Although I think Blago could get a job as an Elvis impersonator and make a lot more money performing in Vegas than selling a Senate seat in Washington.

Our birthdays affect our perceptions, that's all

We're looking at the same thing, but our own birthdays signal the new beginning instead of the season. Fair enough. In Wicca and (I believe) paganism, anything to do with growth or expansion is done between the New Moon and Full Moon. Anything to do with contraction is done between the Full and the New. This may just be my memory or past impression of it, but I look at the Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day of the year, as the equivalent of the New and Summer Solstice, which is the longest day of the year, as the equivalent of the Full. Maybe that's why I look at December as getting ready for growth and expansion. We do what works for us and I guess that's all that counts. :) JOIN XOMBA IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO ADD!

for me, psychologically winter begins with the time change

when it starts getting dark earlier, even if it technically starts on the 21st of December. And, since I'm an April baby, it makes more sense for me to think of beginnings in spring and save the New Year's resolutions for then. So I guess I'll have to disagree with you on that one. So what do you think of the Blagojevich scandal and how it'll affect Obama and the Democrats? Just kidding. You don't have to answer that! ;)

December is actually the beginning of Winter, veg... ;)

There is something symbolic of the Winter Solstice to reflect back on "what was". Plus, given the calendar, January (named, of course, for the Roman god Janus), is the psychological beginning to the new year. Lastly, my birthday is in the middle of January, so I like to look back over my accomplishments of the past year of my life and plan the next year of my life that begins January 13th. I understand that there is merit to waiting for the Vernal Equinox, since it is the symbol of new life and a renewal, but it doesn't do the same thing for me psychologically.
