I just found this article about adding your own decorations to Christmas wreaths-- something that seems like it should be obvious but honestly hadn't occured to me.  I mean, they sell those big plain green wreaths in the store, right?  What else are you supposed to do with them?  I really liked the decorating tips and ideas in this article, as well as the huge amount of example pictures.  I think I'm going to try this out this year, maybe with some lights wrapped in for my door.
