Decorate Your Dorm Room with Style

The journey to adulthood has just begun. It has been a highly anticipated event as you prepare for one of the biggest transitions of your life. As you do your final preparations for the grand departure, you realize that you will be spending hours and hours in a tiny room that will become your place of solitude. Your college dorm room should be a place where you can relax comfortably after a long day of classes and schoolwork.

Maximize the Space with a Loft or Bunk Bed

Residence halls are notorious for their close quarters and tiny living spaces. A dorm room, or at least your portion of the dorm room, is usually no larger than a 12 foot by 12 foot living space. Ugh, close quarters for sure. Don’t despair, because there are a few practical ways to create a viable living area for you to enjoy. First of all, consider a loft or a bunk bed. These look contemporary, and there is no better method for maximizing the floor space in a dorm room. If the cost of a loft bed exceeds you budget, consider raising the bed provided by the university with cinder block or specially designed lofting kits that you can find at your local hardware store. The best attribute of a loft of bunk bed is that you can utilize the space under the bed for storage, a desk, a dresser, or whatever you need. Even a bunk bed will help maximize the square footage in your residence because half of the room will still be available for your other pieces of furniture.

Create a Multi-Purpose Desk Area

Computer stands and multi-purpose desks are now available with extremely small footprints. Your local Walmart, furniture store, or hardware store will most likely have a great selection. These will do wonders for a college dorm room because you can store books and materials above and below the desk area. In addition, you can use the trays and storage compartments for a printer, books, or the hard drive. If you are fortunate enough to have a laptop, then your desk area can even be used for the storage of supplies and daily necessities.

Design Your Space Using Containers and Tubs

There is nothing worse than a cluttered dorm room. With the variety of tubs and storage containers available today, you can really de-clutter your dorm room with great ease. At most discount stores, you can find a great selection of colorful and artsy containers in a range of sizes. Most importantly, do your best to organize right from the start. It is a much more difficult process to try to gather and sort all of your items after your roommate has added his or her items to the mix.
