Delaroche’s Famous ‘Execution of Lady Jane Grey’ Exhibits at National Gallery in 2010
posted November 3, 2009 - 12:35amPaul Delaroche's most famous painting, The Execution of Lady Jane Grey, depicts teenager Lady Jane Grey in the instance before the axeman beheads her. A dethroned monarch De Facto convicted of high treason, Lady Jane was given her death warrant by her sister-in-law Queen Mary I.
The National Gallery in London, England currently houses the magnificent oil on canvas, which will hang in the Sainsbury Wing with other Paul Delaroche paintings for a special exhibition— Painting History: Delaroche and Lady Jane Grey— that will run in 2010 from February 24 through May 23.
The 1833 painting, with the French name of le Supplice de Jeanne Grey, was first exhibited in 1834 at the Salon in Paris. For the history behind the painting with its horrific theme, click here.
