Dennis Kucinich: Random Reflections on a Dark Horse Candidate

"It's time to start giving this man (Dennis Kucinich) the attention the popular media is failing to provide. The era of spoon-fed presidential candidates needs to end and America needs to take its democracy back." - Matthew Wergin, Bozeman Billings Gazette, 12/15/07

"Dennis Kucinich offers us a very singular opportunity as we share this minute of time on earth. We the people. It is for us to determine what is electable. And here's how simple it is: If we, those of us who truly believe in the Constitution of the United States of America, all of us, vote for Dennis Kucinich, he will be elected. Could we call him electable then? If so, America will stand taller than ever." - Sean Penn, Kucinich for president endorsement speech, San Francisco, 12/7/07 (http://rawstory.com)

"Kucinich's rhetoric against free-trade deals such as the North American Free Trade Agreement -- which President Clinton pushed through Congress in 1993, but which now draws criticism from even Clinton's wife -- has been adopted by the leading candidates._ – Perry Bacon Jr., The Washington Post, 12/16/07

(Dennis Kucinich is):
The only Democratic Candidate to oppose the War and the subsequent Occupation;
The only Democratic Candidate to show the judgment and Constitutional integrity to vote against the Patriot Act;
One of only six House members to vote against the Homegrown Terrorism Act;
The only Democratic Candidate who is taking the threats to our Democracy seriously and actually holding this Administration accountable through Impeachment;
The only Presidential Candidate offering a truly universal, not-for-profit health care system;
The only Democratic Candidate who will cancel U.S. involvement in job killing, deficit building, human exploiting, environmental raping trade agreements, NAFTA/WTO

"The debate and primary system in this country is a sick joke. Only the moneyed, corporate-tied candidates are taken seriously, while the grassroots campaigns get dissed and left out. What we have are the formalities of a primary system to give the appearance of democracy, and a coronation at the national conventions, because God forbid all the candidates running for their parties' nominations be heard by the voters." – Archangel M, www.dailykos.com, 12/14/07

Regarding the absence of Dennis Kucinich from Thursday’s Des Moines Democratic debate sponsored by the Des Moines Register, said paper stated, "It was our determination that a person working out of his home did not meet our criteria for a campaign office and full-time paid staff in Iowa." Even though the Kucinich campaign employs a full-time Iowa campaign manager, the fact that he does not work out of a storefront office disqualified him, as far as the Des Moines Register was concerned, although oddly, it had no such qualms about the participation of Alan Keyes, a little-known candidate, in the Republican debate.

"The Iowa caucuses have been portrayed as having national implications, and if the Register has decided to use hair-splitting technicalities to exclude the leading voice of the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party, then the entire process is suspect." – Kucinich for President 2008 press release

Interestingly, back in August after the Democratic presidential forum in Des Moines, Kucinich won the online ABC news poll with 10,000 votes as the most frequent answer to the question “Who do you think won the Democratic debate?” Obama came in second at 8,000 and Hillary third at 5,000. Even after ABC inexplicably pulled this poll and replaced it with a second poll posing a different question—“Who do you think is winning the Democratic debates?”—Kucinich finished neck-in-neck with Hillary Clinton. Strangely, ABC failed to announce the results of the poll, and even cut Kucinich out of an online Democratic presidential candidate group photo, with no explanation offered.

And if you’re interested in owning a sleazy piece of American history, the Kucinich campaign is selling 1,200 Palm Beach County vintage voting machines obtained by a Florida supporter, Jim Dobyns, from the 2000 stolen presidential election, for $219.95 plus shipping, on the campaign website. They come complete with chads, replica butterfly ballots, and signed letters by Kucinich authenticating the machines as having being used in that infamous election.

In the meantime, the Kucinich campaign is doing well, thank you very much, Dennis having won yet another poll, this one among grassroots party activists, with 41% of the vote, placing number one, from Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), which has more than 80,000 members. John Edwards came in second at 26%, and the other candidates were far behind. He also won the top slot among PDA members in Iowa and New Hampshire, two early-voting states that are vital to the political future of all the candidates.

Previously Kucinich had come out on top in a Democracy for America (DFA) poll in 47 of 50 states with 32% of the vote, again winning Iowa and New Hampshire, as well as garnering the top spot in a poll by The Nation magazine, with 35% of the vote.

In another poll in December, Kucinich won 75% of the votes cast in the IndependentPrimary.com internet poll, in which over 110,000 people voted. This may prove to be significant particularly in New Hampshire, where 44% of voters are registered independent but are allowed to vote in the Democratic presidential primary.

How fares the Dick Cheney impeachment bill introduced and voted on in the House last month by Kucinich and sent to the Judiciary Committee for further study? On Friday, three members of that committee, Representatives Robert Wexler, Luis Gutierrez, and Tammy Baldwin, jointly stated, “The charges are too serious to ignore. There is credible evidence that the Vice President abused the power of his office, and not only brought us into an unnecessary war but violated the civil liberties and privacy of American citizens. It is the constitutional duty of Congress to hold impeachment hearings.”

In response to which, Kucinich said, “I appreciate the support of my good friends in this effort to hold our highest elected officials accountable, under the Constitution of the United States of America, for their violations and abuses of their sworn oaths to the Constitution and to the people of this nation. With the continuing drumbeat from the Administration toward a possible war with Iran, the need for hearings is more urgent than ever.”

It’s worth noting again that Dennis Kucinich is the sole Democratic Presidential candidate to call for impeachment proceedings against the Vice President. His fellow candidates have taken one of two paths: they’ve either ignored the issue or they’ve adopted the official policy of the Democratic Congressional leadership, who have repeatedly stated that impeachment is off the table. - PRNewswire-USNewswire, 12/14/07

Arizona Representative Raúl Grijalva announced that he would co-sponsor Kucinich's "Articles of Impeachment Against Dick Cheney," admitting that it has a "limited chance" of gaining the support it needs, but stating that he was backing it because of the serious abuses of the Bush-Cheney administration. – Daniel Scarpinato, Arizona Daily Star, 12/15/07
