Desperate Republicans Have No Intention of Going Down to Defeat With Either Dignity Or Honor

While the linked article is about how toxic Republican presidential candidate John McCain has become to his own party, particularly when he has completely sold out every "mavericky" principle that he formerly used to separate himself from other politicians, it is instructive to see where the recent allegations against ACORN come in.

Quote:
While McCain and his allies at Fox have persuaded lazy journalists that ACORN has been up to something nefarious by turning in fake registration forms, they never mention that ACORN is required to turn in all forms they collect and that ACORN has been flagging the suspicious ones for the registrars. Only a Republican trying to muddy the waters and set the stage for an argument that "everybody" cheats, would claim that there is some kind of equivalency between systematically disenfranchising tens of thousands of voters in Democratic leaning areas of battleground states and someone turning in a registration form claiming to be Babe Ruth or Richard Nixon. Can anyone with a straight face claim that "Babe Ruth" or "Richard Nixon" is going to try to vote in November? Or what about 7 year old O'jahnae Smith? Are Republicans worried that she's going to show up on election day and demand to vote? Believe it or not, the Wall Street Journal had a calmer and more reliable report.

This isn't about ACORN or Barack Obama or poor people disenfranchised as voters. No, it is about a desperate and unprincipled McCain campaign resorting to flinging poo at the American voter to distract us from its own impotent and failed campaign.

Dead man voting

Certainly the anti-ACORN accusations have been exaggerated, but I was surprised to learn that the organization has been implicated in bogus voter registrations or votes in the last couple of presidential elections, at least.

ACORN has been around a while

I fully admit that their business model is bad. Taking the lowest rung of the ladder and giving them jobs to go and get people to register to vote is one thing. I believe they've changed their pay-out from commission (number of signatures) to wage-based (hours worked) in order to cut down on the number of would-be fraudulent workers.

Still, ACORN has been completely up front when it comes to fraud and is most always, if not always, the one to initiate police action when fraud has been discovered. The problem is not with the bad employees per se, but with an election system that demands that ALL voter registration forms, including ones suspected as fraudulent. To ACORN's credit, they flag the ones they believe to be fraudulent and let the registrar of voters know about them.

When the Las Vegas ACORN offices were raided recently, it was seen by many as a political stunt because ACORN has been working with the Nevada state government since February on voter registration forms that ACORN employees submitted but were identified by ACORN as being fraudulent.

Furthermore--and this is needs to be kept in mind whenever anyone reads a story about ACORN and voter fraud--there is a huge difference between random names and addresses submitted by bad employees to pad their tallies and a physical, flesh-and-blood human being voting with the phony name and address. I'd like to see any proof to go with the accusations that prove that anyone actually voted in any past election, which is VOTER FRAUD, as opposed to bad forms, which is VOTER REGISTRATION FRAUD.

The conservative blogosphere and Republican Party are both trying to get undecided voters to believe that Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck are actually going to cast votes for Barack Obama in Florida, which is far from the truth.

A former Republican National Committee chairman--Mehlman was his last name--actually apologized recently for Republican tactics to suppress the number of Democrats going to the polls. If you look at the news coming out of Michigan this week, it would appear that some Republicans are doing whatever it takes to steal the election for John McCain, even if it means lying to potential Democratic voters to keep them from casting their votes.

This story is going to be much ado about nothing and could be seen as a preemptive strike by the McCain campaign to cast a shadow over a likely Obama presidency. With the way the economy is clunking along, that may be all El Presidente Boosh needs to invoke one of many Executive Orders declaring martial law.
