Desperation

Oh my god! Where is he! Where’d go?! Oh, shit! No, No, No!

“Travis….big guy….where are you? Are you hiding from mommy?”

Please, giggle, please Travis answer…please, please!

“Travis…please come out….mommy’s starting to worry.”

Damnit he’s not here! Oh, god please don’t let my little boy be missing, please, please. I swear I’ll never yell at him again.

“Madam, have you seen a little boy, about 2, come thru here with a blue sweater on?”

“Yeah, some guy was carry him, they went that way towards the cashiers.”

“WHAT! Get security, hurry! I didn’t come here with any man! My baby was abducted!”

“I’ll get them right away!”

I have to run faster! I can catch them! He’s not going to take my baby! Look around! Look for the blue sweater! He’s there somewhere!

“Miss, are you the one with the missing baby?”

“YES! YES! Hurry I can catch him. Don’t let him get away!”

“Do you see them?”

“NO! But they couldn’t’ve gotten far! I only turned my head for a minute.”

“You take that side of the parking lot. I’ll take this. Yell if you see them. The police have already been called. What’s your son’s name? What was he wearing?”

“Travis! And he’s wearing a blue sweater and blue jeans!”

Where?! Where?! Maybe they are hiding in one of the cars – I should look inside. NO! NO! NO! Where are they?! Where is my baby you son-of-a-bitch I’m going to kill you when I find you! Where! Where!

“Miss? Miss?”

“What!”

“The police are here – they’ve blocked all the entrances and exits in the store and on the street. They want you to come look at the tape and see if you recognize the man.”

“No! He’s here – I can find him.”

“Miss, please, no one is getting out of here now – you have my word. If you can recognize the man it will make the job of finding your boy easier. Please!”

“Ok! But we have to hurry – he’s here I know it and I don’t want this monster doing anything to him. He’s here!”

“We’ll hurry.”

“Joe, give me women’s apparel 15 minutes ago. Cameras 4, 6, and 9. Then on this screen give me entrance and exit on door 2 15 minutes ago. And all parking cams 15 ago. Over here”

“Ready, sir.”

“Ok, roll 4, 6, and 9”

“Ok….there you are and your boy. You’re looking at the clothes rack. THERE! Stop it!. There he is! Zoom in! Do you recognize him?”

No, it can’t be!

“I…..can’t see his face for the hat. I need to see his face!”

“Ok, roll…..He takes Travis and heads for the exit. Roll the exit cam.”

Oh, no….no.

“Nothing…….there! Here he comes! Wait…..Ok stop! Now zoom! There! A clear shot of his face!”

Damnit!

“It’s my ex! George Richards! He’s Travis’ father! He drives a red Jetta. Look for a red Jetta! A red Jetta!”

“Red Jetta – got it! Stay here, Miss!”

“No, I’m coming!”

“The police say there’s only one red Jetta in the lot. Said they can see a man inside. No sign of your son.”

I’m going to kill the son-of-a-bitch. He better hope the police get him before I do.

“That’s him! That’s his car!”

“Ok, let the police handle it. They’ll get you if they need you.”

“Look, he’s coming out already. They’ve got him cuffed. They’re looking the backseat….and there you go – your boy! He looks fine from here.”

“Oh, thank god! Thank you! Thank you! Big guy…….come to momma!”

“Mommy!”

Creepy

Exactly Mia, me and my ex would worry about this sorta thing - more her than me. And I would always try to reassure her by saying that most abductions happen within the family and not by strangers. I don't know how much that helped her. Anyway - write what scares you right? On another note - when writing this I remembered Deep End of the Ocean - a book I absolutely hated. Well, in that book the mother's kid gets taken right in the middle of a crowded hotel lobby and nobody sees anything - kid just vanishes. To make matters worse - it turns out the kid was taken by a high school chum (mom was at the hotel for a high school reunion) and grew up 2 blocks down the street from his family. Awful premise. Anyway, I didn't want this short to be like that.

This is too spooky because

child abduction is a fear of every parent. I read through this so fast to get to the end to make sure the kid was ok. You're lucky he was or else I would have been upset. :) I think you pinpointed exact thoughts of a parent in this situation...excellent!!
