Destination Weddings: British Virgin Islands Wedding Requirements

Thinking of a getting married in sight of the beautiful Caribbean waters of the British Virgin Islands? Find out the facts about destination wedding requirements.

First of all couples need to file an application of marriage license for their destination wedding. This application should be the first step taken because time on island requirements must be met. Couples must be present in the British Virgin Islands three days before the ceremony for their destination wedding. The count down on these three days begins after the marriage application has been filed.

In order to file a marriage application for a destination wedding, couples should visit the Government Administration Complex in Road Town, Tortola.

Application Requirements
Stamp fee: Couples who have resided in the British Virgin Islands for less than 15 days prior to the ceremony for their destination wedding will be required to purchase $110 in postage stamps. For non resident couples who have been on island for more than 15 days the stamp fee is $50.

Passports Required: Passports are required not only to confirm identity but also to confirm the arrival date for couples in order to levy the stamp fee.

Proof of Marriage Dissolution: Divorced individuals must submit a copy of their divorce decree. Widows or Widowers must submit a death certificate of the deceased spouse.

Witnesses: Two witnesses must be present to sign the application. These people cannot serve as witnesses of the marriage.

Completed marriage applications are then taken to the marriage registrar. The following information must be presented to the registrar:
• Full legal names
• Ages
• Dates of Birth
• Occupations
• Witness Names (at least two and not the same two that witnessed the application).
For information on the location, contact telephone number and email and business hours of the marriage registrar’s office visit the British Virgin Islands governmental website http://www.bvi.gov.vg/products_directory.asp?iProd=50&iCat=0&hierarchy=

Fees
If couples wish to be married in the government registrar’s office the fees are $35. For those wishing to be married in another location on island (and most destination wedding couples do so) the fee is $100. Both fees are excised in US dollars the currency of the British Virgin Islands.
