Did You Read This? Sachin Dedicates Century .....Wow!

Can you believe this? Sachin dedicates his century to those killed in Mumbai attacks.

Just after India beat England by six wickets at the Chennai a report said that Sachin Tendulkar dedicated his century to the families of those killed in the Mumbai terror attacks following.

Big deal. For a person who has lost his kith or kin in those tragic attacks, I wonder what difference Sachin's announcement of "dedication of the century " makes to his life. Or for that matter even the won Test Match.

Now don't get me wrong. I am not for a moment question Sachin's patriotism or his willingness to express solidarity with the affected people. Simply dedicating a match or a century is going to be only a lip service and would be of no use to the bereaved family members. More appropriate gesture would be something on the lines of donating the earnings of this Test to the bereaved families. Or playing out a charity match.

Even the Government gives a token amount to the affected families and washes its hands off the whole issue quickly. Pretty sad.

At times it rankles to see a gross disparity in "what is" and what was possible. Just the other day i read something that caught my eye.

  • An Olympic shooter wins Gold (just a game) & Government gives him Rs 3 crores. But another shooter dies, fighting terrorists (during Mumbai attacks) & government pays his family Rs 5 lakhs. Gross disparity.
  • The elite NSG Force that eventually fought off the Mumbai attackers on 26/11 were transported by ordinary BEST buses, whereas our cricketers are transported by state of the art luxury buses.
  • Imagine jawans lay down their lives to protect every Indian and including these cricketers who are worshiped like demi-gods and get paid even if they lose a match. We worship the cricketers and forget the martyrdom of these brave jawans.

Victory in cricket is a great thing. But I wish victories are also attained in greater arenas of life. Sports especially cricket & cricketers can do much more than lip service. In fact pure lip service is more hurting. In contrast silence is more soothing. At least it hides a hope.

When affluence of one positively impacts the less fortunate ones that would a true victory for the humanity - by the
humanity.

Unsporting Sporting Heroes....

Top sports professionals are actually in a very powerful place to cause change in public perception in a more positive way. But the only change they seem to cause is to their wallet. It is more disappointing when a sporting hero known for his heroics on the sporting arena turns a pauper when faced with real opportunity to rise to the occasion and inspire people. Slogans are framed, icons are made and newer brands unveiled only to fill their velvet pockets. The common man is conveniently relegated to the background. But the good thing is people have begun to seen through all this. Like they say- you can fool some people some time but not all people all the time. Thanks for writing in, MJ Dakota. Sports & Real Life

Jdub, sporting heroes all over the world are stumped by the same malaise - hunger for more money and the inability to part with even some. The gross disparity in their "real" and "reel" life is evident in the statements they make and the body language they exhibit when the camera rolls. It does seem that the more money they make the poorer do they seem to get - in attitude. There are only a handful that seem to inspire. Or are there? Thanks so much for writing in and appreciating my point of view. DO the Write Thing & Get Paid Here

......even if jawans & soldiers are "Fundamentally Right"

Rawnak, war or peace time - I suppose jawans and soldiers always seem to be at the receiving end. With their fundamental rights curtailed they hardly have any scope for voicing their demands firmly - even if they are "Fundamentally Right". Unlike other disciplines of public or private service, any collective effort to voice their grievance is seen as mutinous. Singular opinions do not count. And yet the jawan secures civil & public life and upholds its dignity even at the cost of his life. I hope their time comes soon. Just a few days ago the teachers associations (UGC, I suppose) got their hefty pay revisions over and above the pay commission recommendations after threatening an India wide strike. Sadly, a soldier or a jawan has no such option. A fair pay hike proposal for defence forces is gathering dust at the decision making levels. Does the govt want itself to be held to ransom some way or the other before it grants the pay rise? It seems so from the events of past few months. Wish there were more Dhonis. Thanks Rawnak, for going through my article and appreciating the point I made. DO the Write Thing & Get Paid Here

Well said Kukku

I just got down to reading all the top posts today, and I couldn't agree more with you. These are the exact thoughts that are racing through the minds of a million others, I am sure. Dhoni, had already announced that he would be donating his earnings from the match towards the family of all those who suffered in 26/11 attacks. But, it is sad to see that the other cricketers did not follow their leader! Very well written. Thanks for bringing it out to the public. The saddest part I feel is that there is nobody to fight for the cause of the soldiers or jawans as they are not allowed to protest against the government policies. All other sectors manage to get their problems noticed by the government by holding protests and "bandhs" in the country, which a soldier or a Jawan cannot do. Is there anyone willing to take up their cause and fight for their rights???

Countries and moral ethics

Are closer than most would believe. It is truly sad that the professional sports players and actors/actresses USE world tragedies to advance their popularity. Such lip service is a manipulation to get public kudos for something an average human being does on a daily basis without all the lights, cameras and reporters. Truly sad and to see that this is happening all over the world is sadder still. I dare ya...c'mon you know you want to...Smile! MJ

There is indeed a disconnect between sports and real life

I acknowledge that I have little knowledge of Indian sports, particularly cricket, so I will have to use another analogy to show the disconnect between sports stars and real life. A couple of years back, the tight end for the Cleveland Browns of the NFL, Kellen Winslow, Jr., was mouthing off to the media about a game rather loudly and proclaiming that he was a "soldier" while doing all but thumping his chest and demanding recognition as a "military hero" for his escapades on the gridiron. What he failed to understand is that the U.S. government was at war in Afghanistan and Iraq and real soldiers were fighting and dying for real while he was paid millions of dollars to play what is really a child's game. The fact of the matter, as you have said, is sports players make poor role models. Their one defining characteristic is they get paid a large amount of money to play a child's game, although in a poverty-conscious world, getting "paid" by any means necessary is the ultimate goal in life. As soon as the players cash in, they forget where they came from and waste their blessings and talent. There are exceptions to the rule, but not enough to disabuse us of the idea that sports figures will always make poor role models. JOIN US IN TOASTING YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS!

Very Thoughtful Comment, Taprial

Taprial, my sincere thanks for your comments. I deeply value them & respond thus after reading: In these times when celebrity utterance are Godspeak and people blindly inculcate frivolous remarks from them, it is deeply reassuring to know that sanity still rules the roost at the lower side of pyramid. Feels good to see that the point i make is seen in correct light and the issue that I raise is validated. Taprial, it is indeed reassuring to read comments from a towering personality such as you on this. Thanks for taking time out and giving a thoughtful comment. I openly admit i have learnt and improved so much from merely reading the works of only a few among the scores of great writers present out here on Xomba. So much more is in store. I am really enjoying out here. Thanks again, taprial. (Your take on "dedication of comment" to Sachin was hilarious :-) DO the Write Thing & Get Paid Here

Good Point

Nicely written, kukku. You have just brought out the lack of maturity and intellect in our so called role models. Unfortunately there are not many who think like this and especially the media which went ga-ga over his dedication. Remember the ad-campaign where all the biggies, like SRK, Sachin and Hrithik promoted a non-existent company and then the owner of the company vanished. I think it was Home-trade or something like that. None of these models thought anything of the investors who lost the money. Or maybe Sachin had dedicated a century and Hrithik and Shah Rukh a film each to the people who had lost money. +1. By the way this comment is dedicated to Sachin Tendulkar for his loss of sensibilities. Bare Essentials

Century issue

SK Yes, the best thing would have been to dedicate the earnings of the test match,or play some charity games in the memory of those who laid their lives battling terrorists.May be we will witness these things in future. However,Sachin is a very genuine cricketer who has a big heart. For my posts visit www.xomba.com/user/sanjay
