Different Types Of Cataract
posted September 19, 2008 - 8:08pmPeople might have heard about cataract. Basically from the point of view of any layperson, cataract is something that affects the eyes and affects the vision.
What exactly is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Usually cataracts are related to aging and because of this they are common among older people. Studies indicate that by age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. Cataract can occur in both eyes though there it cannot spread on both eyes if only one is affected.
Are all cataracts related to aging?
No, not all cataracts are caused or related to aging. There are other types.
- Traumatic cataract. After an eye injury, cataract may develop. Sometimes it occurs years later.
- Secondary cataract. After a surgery on the eye, a cataract may occur. It may also develop if a person has glaucoma and for people who have other health problems such as diabetes.
- Radiation cataract. Exposure to some form of radiation may also cause cataract.
- Congenital cataract. Like other diseases, cataract can be inherited. Some babies are born with cataract ro develop them in childhood. Often affecting both eyes.
Knowledge of these things will give us a clearer view of the disease. Remember that our eyes plays an important role in our life.
