Sure, you can always go out and buy an emergency charger, but this looks like a fun project. Do it for yourself or do it with your kids as a science project. Maybe they need an idea for an upcoming science fair. Everyone's got cell phones these days, so this cool little charger may just win your kid a ribbon, star, pizza Hut Coupons or whatever they are giving out at school science fairs these days.

NOTE: You might be able to get the mini solar panels from an old solar calculator or garden light. These were usually pretty inexpensive and you might find them at the local Goodwill or thrift store cheaper than buying a couple of new mini solar panels.

That actually looks like a lot of fun and a good thing to know how to do in times of an energy crisis. Solar charged cell phones will soon be pretty standard you have to figure--at least in places like California it would be a waste not to make it standard.
