"Do They Know It's Christmas?"
posted December 18, 2008 - 3:53amWas it really 23 years ago that we had Live Aid and, before that, the group named Band Aid?
Well, as we are about to celebrate another Xmas soon, please remember the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
"Do They Know It's Christmas?" was a song written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984 specifically to raise money for relief of 1984–1985 famine in Ethiopia. The original version was produced by Midge Ure, and released by Band Aid on November 29, 1984.
In late 1984, a BBC report by Michael Buerk was broadcasted highlighting the famine that had hit the people of Ethiopia. Bob Geldof had seen the report and wanted to raise money. With Midge Ure from Ultravox and together they quickly co-wrote the song, "Do They Know It's Christmas?".
Bob Geldof then put together a group called Band Aid, consisting of leading Irish and British musicians that recorded "Do They Know It's Christmas?", which was produced by Midge Ure.
With so much poverty and famine in the world still, it is worth while this Xmas having a listen to "Do They Know It's Christmas?", and the haunting music of the Cars & "Drive" from the Live Aid event, which left such a lasting memory in my heart and mind.
Please do what you can for people who have less than you this Xmas.
Thank you..
