Do Women Multi-Task Better or Just More?
posted January 19, 2009 - 12:28pm"New data released by Integrated Media Measurement Inc. (IMMI) gives us insight into how men and women engage in "simultaneous media use" - that is, surfing the net while also doing some other activity like watching TV. According to the study, it's more common for women to watch TV and use the computer than it is for men. What's more, women supposedly get better at this multi-tasking as they age." (RWW
However, a look at the data just shows that older women just multi-task more! Does anybody here watch TV whilst online, or even writing? I don't count watching TV as a task; it possibly just sits there in the background with either a news channel or sport on. But is it productive?
Anyway, luckily the authors saved the day with their final paragraph. "[...]it's been discovered that multi-tasking is more myth than reality, since the human brain can only really focus on one thing at a time, no matter how many activities a person is engaged in. The new advice for increased productivity is to slack off, work simpler, and ditch multi-tasking altogether."
Phew! That's what I thought.
