Do You Know What Your Child Is Up To?

By: Jaymie Pierce

What are kids doing on the Internet? Have you checked your child’s MySpace or Facebook to see what they are posting? Gone are the days of a teen hiding their diary in their room and hoping their snooping parent didn’t find it. Kids don†t think about their parents being Internet savvy enough to find them on the social networks. With safety being an issue for parenting it’s important to be looking and seeing what your children are posting on these websites and to whom.

Internet predators are notorious for finding kids on social networking websites and impersonating a younger person to get close. It is imperative that parents teach children about the safety of using the Internet. It’s a sad thing that we have to take away some of the innocence of our children by alerting them to the facts of those that are predators and what they are capable of doing, but in today’s world it must be done to protect the children.

Missing children are mentioned constantly on the news and there are girls and boys that are naïve enough to meet with people they find through networking without even thinking twice. There are too many dangers in the world to let children go around unaware.

How many homes are there in America or across the globe where there are multiple computers, with children having access to the Internet unattended? How many children younger and older have mobile phones? With communication spanning the globe with access to texting on mobile phones or instant messaging on the computer, parents must be vigilant and keep up with what their kids are up to on these services. Do you know the lingo? What are all the abbreviations that are being sent back and forth between kids? Some of it may shock a parent! With technology advancing and children becoming very versed in a new age that parents didn’t have when they were younger the kids are growing up quickly. This means that parents must change their mindset about the innocence of our kids and begin teaching them about safety on the Internet or through the use of their mobile phones. No one wants their child to lose their innocence too early or to end up hurt in any way. The best prevention is to take action and be proactive in their lives.
