After all, she started her career young, at the age of 11! It was a small role, but a role nonetheless, as a dancer in a kid's cereal commercial. At about the same time, she started acting lessons.
Born into a family of actors, October 5, 1975, in Reading, Berkshire, England, UK, she grew up with the same name she is well known by...but her nickname is "English Rose". Sounds fitting to me. Parents are actors Roger & Sally Winslet. Grandparents are actors Oliver and Linda Bridges. Uncle is Robert Bridges, apparently well-known on London's West End theatre district. Her two sisters, Anna and Beth, are also actresses. I'm not sure about her brother.
So is it nature or nurture that afforded Kate her career? Does anyone really know this family she comes from? I don't. She might have afforded both nurture and nature toward her career, being that she is from a family full of actors (no matter how well known or unknown they are). I, for one, think she has earned her title as an actress. I don't know these family members, but I do know many of the movies she's starred in. Among them are Sense & Sensibility, Hamlet, Eternal Sunshine, and (of course) Titanic. It is rumored that she turned down roles in the well known movies, Shakespeare in Love and Anna & the King. It was said to have been so that she could star in Hideous Kinky and Holy Smoke. One thing, outside of acting, that I admire about her, is that she is another woman who has gone into show business as a not-so-thin person. She seems to exude confidence, regardless of how heavy or thin she appears to be. She also is not the tallest woman in show business (though she's also not the shortest). She is 5 foot 8. She is among the ranks of other women who have decided to take a stand against women having to be thin to be attractive, whether they're in show business or not. Hurray for Winslet!
