Does Ginkgo Biloba Really Help Alzheimer's Disease? New Research Findings
A report from JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) says that a six year evaluation on the effects of Ginkgo biloba extract on cognitive function in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients yielded nothing. However, the American Botanical Council (ABC) declared that the exact same study “supported” evidence that treatment with Gingko biloba helped stem symptoms of cognitive decline as well as “other uses.”
So much scientific research has financial repercussions that actual "results" can get swamped by propaganda from all sides. Pharmaceuticals do not like natural medicines because they cannot patent them, although they can patent active chemicals if they can find them and hence sell essentially the same product for an inflated price. In the other camp, the herbal remedies industry also makes a lot of money selling things that may or may not work, thereby often selling hopes rather than cures. The ABC wants research lasting 10 to 15 years - long enough to keep those Gingko biloba capsules flying off the shelves. So, why don't they do the research themselves?
