I disagree with title that dogs are smarter than cats. The article linked to implied that dogs were more successful at string theory than cats were. I don't think that is an all-inclusive study into cat intelligence. Using your title based on the research it could be concluded that dogs are smarter an humans as well. In most cases humans should fare better in intelligence than dogs. Dogs do have special senses that allow them to make judgments that humans wouldn't make. Same as cats have certain instinctual skills that would make them more adept at certain tasks than humans or dogs. In my personal experience I am convinced a cat is more cunning than dogs in many ways. My cat knows how to open a door with his paws. He also is capable of keeping himself up high enough to prevent a mishap with a dog. When confronted head on (as a kitten) with a curious dog that was 5 times his size, he went for the nose with his claws. The dog was no longer curious and acted quite terrified of the little kitten.
