Don Mattingly Said to Leave Yankees if Girardi Takes Manager's Job

The offseason shake-up continues for the New York Yankees. With Joe Girardi being offered the manager's job, bench coach Don Mattingly has reportedly said that he will not return to the Yankees.

Mattingly was one of the candidates interviewed for the Yankees manager's job. Mattingly, who played with the Yankees many years, had been out of baseball until being brought back as a coach four years ago. Apparently there was an understanding that Mattingly would eventually be given the manager's job, but ESPN radio in New York reports that with Girardi being offered the job, Mattingly has decided not to return to the team.

Joe Girardi was offered the job as Yankees manager, it was reported this morning.

The news about Mattingly comes a day after Alex Rodriguez last night declined to negotiate a contract extension with the Yankees.
