One man's curse is another man's blessing. So goes an old proverb. You don't have to tell that to Brenton Netz, though. High gas prices have given him a nifty side business for the last two years. He's part of a growing trend toward picking up older Metros, fixing them up and flipping them at a handsome profit. Blue book values of the cars are irrelevant, with people paying around three times blue book for a well running Metro. With hybrids' prices starting at about 21,000, people are opting for the more economical older cars, which, particularly with the 1991 Metro and the XFi, get about 40 mpg. That's about the same as the average hybrid.

Marci Solomon, for example, recently bought her Metro for 7,300 after winning a vigorous bidding war for the car on E-Bay. She acknowledges that's triple the blue book but considering her gas savings it's worth it.
