Spoiler Warning - Don't read this post unless you have seen "I Am Legend" the new Will Smith movie, as this post will reveal several points in the film.

Recently I had the pleasure of watching "I Am Legend". This movie is set in New York and portrays the time period from 2009 - 2012.

In this movie, Will Smith plays a guilt ridden biophysicist living in a ravaged New York city. Flash backs reveal a cancer vaccine gone wrong killing 90% of the earth's population and mutating 9% in to nocturnal, sunlight sensitive, animal like zombies. Bent on consuming any flesh available.

Although this movie was pretty well done there were a few holes in the story worth poking at.

One thing that really bothered me about this movie were the mutated zombie like humans. They moved with a speed and agility that was beyond human. Each and everyone of them had like 1% body fat. Yet all these zombies, were no more than 3 years into that zombie state. They became predators filled with blood lust. Aside from the fact that they moved too quickly, there was a bigger problem. They used their heads to slam into anything and everything. With no noticeable damage or negative effect. They used their heads to slam through bullet proof glass, to overturn vehicles, to slam through doors and walls. It was completely un-realistic. No mutation would change the physiology of the human skull to withstand that kind of abuse. What is worse than that, is that when Will Smith's character captures one for testing he hits it in the head with the butt of his rifle rendering it unconscious. So, how on earth can you knock one out with a single blow from a rifle butt, yet, the primary attack from these things is head slamming through almost anything. This part was very poorly thought out.

Other aspects of the movie were somewhat predictable. Like his wife and child dying in the helicopter crash. Just the long sequencing of their helicopter lifting off was enough to clue us all in that this was their last moment.

In the beginning of the move we are shown a scientist being interviewed on a talk show regarding her cancer vaccine trials and success. They give the figure of 10,009 test subjects. This is a very unrealistic number as most clinical trials remain under 1000 participants. Although it is right on track with something being approved before it is found to be safe.

From the Christian perspective it was rather upsetting to have Will Smith's character proclaim there is no God. But Hollywood's perception of God is often askew from Christianity and it isn't surprising in the least to have yet another remark for the masses to absorb into their sub-consciences.

One last hole to cover, would be that Will Smith's character had set up a radio message on all AM bands, broadcasting that every day he would be at a specific location during midday when the sun was highest in the sky. Hoping that any survivors would meet him in this location.

Well once he loses his canine companion, he really loses it and appears to go on a suicide run in the late evening. He takes an SUV and is running over several of the zombies near the waterfront. Eventually they subdue him by slamming their heads into his vehicle and overturning it. Now lying in the wreckage he is moments away from his death, when suddenly he is saved by the woman and her child.

First of all, what the heck is she doing there during the night hours. His radio message clearly states "when the sun is highest in the sky." She has no reason to be there at that late hour. Secondly why in the heck do the zombies retreat from her vehicle instead of attacking them both and eating them? Are her car's headlights anymore effective than the ones on his SUV? Don't think so.

The ending of the movie, when he sacrifices his life to save the cure and the only other main characters in the movie was also fairly predictable. It tied in right away with the movie's title.

That would make an interesting Google search

I won't discuss who owns what and where because this isn't the proper venue for it, but you would find the Google search for information particularly interesting. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

Who

Who exactly owns Hollywood? Tri-Lateral Commission maybe? Masons? Skull and Bones? Maybe I am taking this down a road I shouldn't. But why can't a character in a movie who has lost just about everything and seen some of the most horrific things come to believe that there is no God. Given his circumstances that is a very logical conclusion. Also, add the fact that he is a man of science which may also preclude him from believing in God. Had he been a man of Faith maybe he goes crazy God and believes that God spared him for a reason. But he is not so it seems a logical character development.

My wife and I talked about seeing the movie when it first came out in the theater because most Will Smith movies seem to play best on the big screen. But, we had other priorities and didn't. Now that it is out on DVD, we have added it to our Netflix and will get to see it sooner or later. I understand what you mean about Hollywood having a love-hate relationship with God. I understand a lot about who actually owns Hollywood, so I'm not waiting for them to change anytime soon, however. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?
