Dreah Writes for a Living: How Good are your Xombytes?

One good thing leads to another. Some people write for fun. Some people write with dreams of becoming a paid writer. You never know who is going to be the one to cross over… unless you look carefully. Quality of work will be your clue.

If you write well, even when you are just having fun, you be contacted for writing jobs. This has certainly happened for me. As a new writer with shaky skills and minimal exposure, I started writing for Themestream.com years ago and was contacted to write a few articles for a publisher who paid me upfront. My writing on blogit.com (a blogging community) got me a six-month contract last year. However, these contracts were few and far apart. What was the problem? I wondered. I finally ran into an editor brave enough to tell me. I was writing poorly. It was not that I could not write, but that I did not care to give my best effort when I was writing for fun. "It was my personal blog, who cares?” I thought. The people looking for writers cared.

Since I started editing even my shortest of blogs I have found that lots of writing projects come my way. I barely even have time to write for fun anymore. The number of people that call me to write keeps me busy. I even have a blog that I am paid for! In my spare time I post on Associated Content and places like Xomba to keep my exposure going, as most of the private commissions don’t have my name on it. (… and I am OK with that).

Therefore, I am writing all of this to say, always write well. Whether you are writing a blog post, an article, a xombyte, or a xomblurb, write it well. It will serve two purposes. First, your writing will be noticed, and work will begin to come to you. Second, a site is only as good as the quality of its writers. So, if the quality of Xomba writers is known to be superior, then your future Xomba income will also increase. Heck, you may even decide to turn down editors who come calling.
