Dress for Success – How to dress for a job interview

When stepping back into the job market or transitioning in your career, remember the popular phrase, “you never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Interviewing for a new job can be stressful and overwhelming for even the most level-headed and calm candidates; looking professional and well groomed will not only make a strong first impression on potential employers but it will also give you a certain air of confidence.

THE GOLDEN RULE

First and foremost, follow the golden rule: “It is always better to be overdressed than underdressed.” For both men and women, a conservative business suit is always a safe bet.

GUIDE TO YOUR CLOSET AND DEPARTMENT STORES

Color Palette: Choose tones that are subdued such as black, grey, tan, or brown. You can save your red power suit for the day of your first presentation (after you land the job).

Style: Ensure that your suit is appropriately tailored to your body and does not tug or pull in any area. Also make sure that your sleeves and pant legs are not too long or short.

Tailoring: Just as Goldielocks struggled to find the pourage that was “just right,” if you find a suit that is almost perfect, buy it and let a tailor make it perfect. It is a wise and worthwhile investment.

Shoes: Ensure that shoes do not have scuffs or look worn or tattered in any way. Using a little shoe polish can make a slightly worn pair of shoes look brand new again.

Hair: A simple and neat hairstyle that frames your face nicely is your best bet. Go for a natural look; males should steer clear of excess hair products and females should avoid using too many hair accessories.

ACCESORIZE

No matter what you’re wearing, you best accessory is and always will be your smile. Employers will imagine you interacting with their clients and will want to ensure that your demeanor is friendly, helpful, and amiable. There is no better way to illustrate the way you will treat your future employer’s clients than the way you interact in your interview.

GETTING A GREAT DEAL

You don’t have to spend a bundle for a great interview outfit. One of my associates has an amazing wardrobe and buys a lot of her basic items at Target. To get an idea of their inventory before hitting the stores, check out Target.com. Other associates find great deals at Express and Victorias Secret. Check out expressfashion.com or victoriassecret.com.
