In an apparent parting gift from the Bush administration to the oil and gas industry, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management plans to auction on Dec. 19 more than 50,000 acres of oil and gas parcels alongside or within view of Utah's Arches National Park, Dinosaur National Park and Canyonlands National Park.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has reversed a plan to drill in scenic Utah canyons. For the second time in a week, the BLM announced late Tuesday that it was pulling auction parcels from an expanded oil-and-gas leasing program in Utah. The latest tracts include land inside Nine Mile Canyon and Desolation Canyon on the Green River.

The BLM didn't say why it was pulling the lease tracts, but the prospect of drilling near Utah's scenic treasures brought condemnation from conservation groups.
