During the Holidays Give & Receive

During the Holidays Give & Receive

Although the holiday spirit is often overrun by the idea of decorations and trendy gifts, the season offers the perfect opportunity to give and receive at the same time.
Rather than fighting through crowds of angry shoppers for gifts your loved ones may want to return later anyway, consider making tax-deductible contributions to a favorite charity instead. There are qualifying charities for nearly any interest, ranging from wildlife causes to medically related foundations, schools to homeless shelters. If you feel it is a worthy cause, it stands to reason that other people probably do to. The group you want to donate to should be able to tell you whether your contributions would be tax-deductible and if they can’t the IRS can.
Also, cleaning out your closets and attics for charity can lead to tax deductions. The vast majority of organizations that accept these kinds of contributions will be more than happy to sign an inventory for your tax records. Making it easier still, most tax preparation software has an IRS-approved value chart of just about every conceivable item you could want to donate, particularly clothes. You get spring-cleaning done early and save your self some money come tax time.
As long as donations are made by the 31st of December they can be claimed as deductions on the current years takes.
What better gift to yourself for the holidays than to give and receive.

I'm Glad I Could Help

Cara- My mom actually does the same kind of work. She was working for a place called Lamb's Farm in Illinois & has since transferred to the public school system. She helps the kids work in mainstream jobs. I hate buying gifts myself. I have a sister-in-law that really ruined it for me. Now I just do donations. If your family & friends don't appreciate the thought then they really didn't deserve a gift anyway. If there is anything else I can do, please let me know. Happy Christmas, Merry Everything! Erika

Incredible idea!

Thank you so much for this great article! I was at a loss as to what to get my sister and here we are a week before Christmas. She is difficult to shop for in the first place and doesn't use anything you buy for her. She works at a facility for mentally retarded adults. It is a cause that is very dear to her. Your Xombyte inspired me to make a donation in her honor to the Special Olympics. Thank you again for your wonderful suggestion! Cara

Thank You!

Dragonfly- I really appreciate your kind comments. I actually have been published in the Dollar Stretcher magazine before. Please keep your comments coming & if there is anything you would like me to specifically write about, please let me know. Erika
