e-tutor (essay editor)
posted May 26, 2008 - 10:52pmI took up BSE-English just because I had to finish a degree. I don't hate teaching, but I believe that that kind of work is not for me. Oh, I am effecient, but never effective. As a result, I had to give up that dream for something I love the most--writing!
I don't have any formal training. My ability to write (I am not a pro though) is based on my love for reading classic novels. I love James Joyce (even if his work is difficult to understand) and William Faulkner (even is his novels make me crazy).
I don't end up as a writer though but as an editor for Korean students' essays. It is hard to sell pieces of writings, especially here in the Philippines. Besides, I have to admit that my grasp for the English language is not yet full. I have to read and learn more to be able to compete with other people, especially, with the native speakers of the English language.
Anyway, this kind of work (essay editing) might be new to others, but this is definitely a good work. It doesn't have pressure. I can do the work whenever I want (we have quotas though) and wherever I want. In addition, I can help kids with my comments (e-tutors need to be compassionate when it comes to the writing ability of the kids). Also, I love reading the kids' ideas. They are fun!
Even if I can't be rich with this kind of work, I will still choose this over any other jobs. Not only because I can write and read but because I can help the kids improve their writing skill. I may not be a "conventional teacher" in a classroom, but I am still a teacher via the Internet.
