Earn Credit Card Reward Points By Paying Your Mortgage
posted April 29, 2009 - 5:05pmThere are several credit card programs where you can earn rewards miles, points, cash back by paying your mortgage or making other payments traditionally limited to cash transactions. Credit Cards have high fees associated with them on the receiving side of the transaction. So most mortgage providers have shunned their use for making your payment. There might also be concern about your credit quality if they allow you to make one loan payment with another loan.
However several services have emerged that allow you to make your payments via credit card. This could be for cash management purposes, or for convenience, or so you can earn rewards.
IndyMac Bank along and American Home Mortgage have signed up with American Express to offer a payment plan where your monthly mortgage payment is charged to your Amex card and you earn any associated rewards. There is a setup fee of $395 for the program, but depending on the size of your mortgage payment that could be quickly recovered in Amex points.
A second option is Charge Smart. It only works with Mastercard and Discover Cards, but allows you to make Mortgage, Auto, Utility, and Student loan payments with your credit card. It has a fee of $4.95 per transaction + a small fee of 2.29% of the transaction amount. This is a great option for cash management and has low fees. Depending on the value of your reward miles or points it may be possible to recover the cost of the transaction charge in credit cards rewards.
There was a third company that allowed credit card mortgage payments for a fee, but at the time of this writing the site appears to be down. I will update this later if it becomes available. The company is CardIt.
