Earning Money From Writing Online: Hints to Help Get a Writing Career Started
posted October 13, 2009 - 12:28pm With the slow recovery of the economy and the growing cost of goods and services, many people are turning to the internet as a way of making money. Writing online can make you anywhere from a few cents a month to several hundred dollars or more, depending on
what sites you write for, and how much effort you put into into an online writing career.
The problem is many people go into writing on line with the idea in mind that they will write a few articles and will be rolling in dough. This, idea is further promoted by web advertising suggesting that online writers can make thousands of dollars easily.
While this might be true in isolated cases, for the majority of online writers, it takes time to build your career and your income. Unless you are extremely lucky you will not become rich overnight. However, will perseverance and a few helpful hints, you can watch your writing income slowly grow into enough to help pay the bills, and perhaps earn you an early retirement.
Start with Good Articles
This sounds like common sense, but many writers simply start their writing career by writing whatever comes to mind and instantly publishing the article. While you can make income writing on any topic imaginable, your article itself needs to clear, concise, and attractive to readers.
To write a good article. Keep your paragraphs short and eliminate necessary words and phrases. Readers are less apt to read articles with long flowing paragraphs than they are to read short paragraphs.
Make your title and your article interesting. Gain their attention with a great title and then hold it with well written material.
Proof read. Errors detract from your articles readability and from your credibility as a writer. Proofreading is essential to gaining readers who will search out your articles.
Learn to Promote Your Work
While many writing websites do a great job of promoting your articles, other websites leave the promotion entirely up to you. Learn the best ways to promote your articles to gain readers who will follow what your write.
Here are a few ways to promote your work.
Your personal email list is one of the best places to start promoting your work. Send a copy of three to five articles to everyone on your email list and ask them to read the ones that they find interesting. It also helps to then ask your friends to forward the list to everyone on their email list making the same request. While this will not get you a large field of readers over the long haul, it will earn you one or two readers that will follow your work and that will add to your views and your overall income tremendously over the long haul.
Make you content rich in SEO terms, and use those terms in your title. This will make it easier for search engines to pick up your article and pass it around to a broader audience.
Another great way of increasing your writing income is to read the work of others and comment on that work. When you take the time to read others work most writers will read yours giving you more views.
Reading other writers work also will give you insight into the kinds of articles other people are writing and will help you to improve your own writing skills. Do not come right out and ask others to read your work as this might be considered spamming and ruin your reputation as a writer.
Use social websites like twitter, facebook and such to help promote your links. While not all your friends on these sites will read what you have written a few will, and all it takes is one person who really enjoys an article and start passing it around to start getting views.
The best way to earn income writing however, is to write daily and keep writing no matter how discouraging it may seem in the short term. If you are a good writer, the more articles you write, the more likely you are to eventually gain the kind of attention that you want.
Always remember, that every view your article gets has the potential of becoming the view that will send your career skyrocketing so, keep writing to get views while at the same time learn to be grateful for each and every view you receive.
Give it Time
The first website I started writing on, I published about 50 articles the first month and made 56 cents, Last month on the same site, I averaged that and more for each article I wrote. Each month my income has almost doubled on that site. At the current rate, my income on that site will net me $100.00 a month or more from just that one site, with only 20 to 30 articles a month. While that is not the greatest income it is a start and since I write for several sites, my income could be close to $1000.00 or more a month by the end of a year.
Don't Forget Passive Income
Many new writers, decide that their article does not earn them enough to be worth the time it took to write it. Perhaps, they are right the first month it is published. They tend to forget however, that most writing sites have a way for any article to earn passive income. Which means once the article is published it will continue to earn income for the entire life of the article.
An article that might earn you just a few cents this month, might in a year earn you several dollars and over 5 years earn you $100 dollars or more. Earning a $100.00 for an article that took an hour to research and write is not a bad return on your investment of time and money. Always look at the big picture and remember that as long as your article is on line and had the ability to earn a passive income for you that article will probably increase its earnings.
Following these tips may not make you rich, but they will certainly help you to start earning from your writing and keep you motivated to write more. Who knows you may just find that you have a career in writing afterall.

I have found that being persistant and patient are key. Many new to writing online think that they will be making the big bucks after a short while. Even traditional writers may wait months, years before ever being published. With some never being published. I think many just want something for nothing.
