eBay Sellers’ Hot and Not list
eBay is awesome; it really is. It is hard to imagine a world where the only place we can sell items is the newspaper classifieds. Now, thanks to eBay, we can sell just about everything!
That being said, some items garner more interest on eBay than others--and trends to tend to shift. During the summer, I did some valuable seller research, and here is an updated Hot and Not list of popular items to sell:
The Hot List (items that you can expect the most $$$ for on eBay)
1) Legos: not really a big surprise, but genuine Legos, sold as sets or part lots, get big bucks on eBay.
2) Anything Marilyn Monroe or Elvis: Again, not a shocker, but Marilyn and Elvis goods all have great seller values on eBay.
3) R/C car and helicopter parts: very expensive toys = high Internet demand for reasonable prices.
4) Vintage T-shirts: People will pay $300 for an old Guns N’ Roses t-shirt in LA; take advantage of the boutique market on eBay!
5) Woman’s shoes: Women love shoes, and eBay proves that this is more than just a cliché.
The Not List (items that get a poor return for sellers)
1) Sports cards and collectables: Sports collectors are picky about buying memorabilia off of the Internet. They are extreme condition junkies.
2) DVD’s: Pay $20 for that DVD? Expect an 80% hit when you try to sell it again.
3) Wedding dresses: Another case where the buyer really wants to see the item before buying.
4) Plasma/LCD TV’s: It is hard to compete with the increasingly cheap market for new TV’s, and coupled with difficult shipping standards, selling your big screen on eBay is not a good move.
5) Books: Unless it is a current college text book or rare 1st addition, books don’t fetch too much on eBay—thanks in part to shipping costs and the plethora of used books stores still in existence.
I am not an eBay expert, but over the last few months, these have been my observations. If you have any others to add to either list, please leave comments!
