eighties music and the decline of MTV

eighties music and the decline of MTV

I LOVE MUSIC!

One of my favorite decades in Music is the 80's. I cannot begin to relay to you how many hours I spent in front of the television fascinated by the phenomenonal new channels MTV and VH-1. Oh how I WANTED to be a VJ. What a concept, non stop music you could WATCH 24 hours a day 7 days a week!

Back then those channels were what music was all about. If you had a music video chances are you were going to be a STAR. The concept video became a part of everyday life, so much so, if you are like me, you had your favorites and waited for them to be aired.

After a while there was a group of Regular Artists that made up the core of this TV music family. They would make guest appearances, promote a new video, and sometimes announce a contest you could enter usually involving meeting the artist and a VJ or two.

We all had our favorite VJs and who can forget the MTV commercials, slogans, theme song and astronaut.

This was a very exciting time in Music History.

So what happened to the Magic of these music channels?

For many reasons things just are not the same. Times, tastes in music, and people change. These channels have become more like non music channels.
The artists are stiil talented, the music is definitely still being played although it sounds totally different, there are still videos, but somehow the spark is gone.

Could it be that we as an audience have lowered our standards and expectations? Has the music industry run out of ideas? Grant it there are some very creative artists out there who present and express themselves well in their videos, just as there are some that do not. Maybe it's just me but I get turned off by the mundane sameness and blatent shake it in your face sex, and similar styles of many of today's so called music super stars.

Just because you have a nice "rack" and you can shake your butt while wearing as little as possible does not mean you have talent. Just because you look and sound like everyone else, or can scream and get all emotional does not mean you have talent either.

Yes the musicians of the 80's sounded similar but each created their own sound based on an extension of what they had in common. Yes there was skimpy clothing and sexuality but it was subtle and generally in good taste. These artists also strived to create and maintain their own look, most times expressing themselves via wardrobe and/or hairstyle. Oh just the mention of the varieties of 80's hair should bring a smile to your face.

So with all of these things in mind, I suppose this brings us to the point of my article.

I invite you to take a Musical Journey with me to recapture the Magic of the Music and Videos of The Eighties. We take a look at both the prominent Artists and their Hits of long ago as well as some you might not have ever heard of.

It is through Articles, Artist Biographies, Video Clips, Lyrics, Direct Links to Sites, and my Comments and Opinions we take this Voyage through My 80's Music World.

Some of these Artists and their Music are rarely if ever heard on the Radio or seen on TV anymore, but they are quite good and deserve more recognition for their talent. You might have heard one or two songs by them but have no clue about their other works.

I am not a music expert but I like music. I am not prudish about a certain Genre or Artist, if I LIKE a Song I just LIKE it.

The voices of the 80's were smooth, loud, emotional and downright sexy. Both male and female artists wore make up and outlandish clothing which added to the "eye candy", while others simply wowed us with their hair. If you had a synthesizer, a cool name, and access to a recording studio you very well could have become the next chart topper.

No I am not stuck in the 80's. I just like the music, the videos and the look of the artists. I collect music and concert videos from those years, and watch them on occasion. I also play my favorite artist's music on a regular basis, simply because it makes me feel good.

If I can bring a Smile to your face by recalling an old Music Memory, get you up and dancing or singing to a Song you have not heard in YEARS, or Introduce you to your New Favorite 80's Artist, then you have made these articles worthwhile.

As a fan of the 80's and

As a fan of the 80's and what MTV used to be, I believe that the beginning of the end for MTV was rap music, namely Yo! MTV Raps. While the music industry was falling over itself to sign any rapper regardless of talent, MTV began running their videos not only on Yo! MTV Raps, but also interspersed between other non-rap videos. Since much of rap's culture is in-your-face sex, featuring rap as much as MTV did for their demographic of raging-hormones teens, anything else was drowned out. Just my opinion.

If you still want the old eighties...

If you still want the old fashion MTV it is on MTV2 were muzic videos spining all day long. VH1 50/50 videos and this new VJ ideas of interviewing old bands so less time for videos but still MTV 2 is something if you want eighties back, watch that stuff. Milan Grbic

the eighties

The 80s were a magical times, and sometimes a bit too surreal. We can thank Ronald Reagan for creating that false world. I grew up on that MTV world and it definitely caught the public's attention. Many of those artists still have a following and possibly strong than many of today's artists. Who would have thought Madonna and Duran Duran to be this strong 20 plus years later? There were lots of odd fashions, like the colorful ties and the Miami Vice look. But at least it doesn't look drab like today's throwback looks. I do have to say that the public's standards have dropped. Many people simply latch onto mediocrity and are OK with it. Much like with business, fashion, movies, TV...hell, our president. Many people have little to be excited about and the music is a reflection of that. Everyone wants to feel sorry for themselves since the 80s. I'll agree that it was an exciting time and maybe it will jolt some reaction into the public today into maybe trying to spark some life back into everyone.
