Electric Slide: Everyone’s Favorite Party Dance
posted December 10, 2007 - 11:47amThe Electric Slide is the mainstay of office parties, wedding receptions and late night discos everywhere. Love it or hate it the dance and companion song have enjoyed popularity and staying power unknown to other dance crazes.
An Electric Slide Primer
The Electric Slide was created in 1976 by dancer
Ric Silver for a re-opening celebration of Vamps Disco. Silver choreographed the dance to Electric Boogie, performed by Marcia Griffiths, a Jamacian artist known as the Empress of Reggae. The tune was written by grammy-award winner Bunny Wailer one of the original members of Bob Marley and the Wailers.
Dance Step Basics
The dance steps have been published online and in print for those wishing to practice at home. Here’s a link to Ric Silver’s choreography

Popularity Explosion
The Electric Slide was re-released in 1989 and a popularity explosion ensued. The dance has been featured in nine movies and three television shows.
Recently Oprah and Ellen shows aired with celebrities such as Tyler Perry (Oprah) and Terry Hatcher (Ellen) performing the dance.
Copyright Infringement
Dance creator, Ric Silver, has recently been engaged in litigation to recoup royalty payments for Electric Slide performances broadcast via television or Internet.
More than 30 years and (unfortunately for may party attendees) the line dance is still going strong.
