Elevator Etiquette: Do You Make These Mistakes?
posted December 22, 2008 - 7:47amIf you work in a building with multiple floors, you're probably no stranger to the elevator as a form of transportation. As convenient as it is, it can be a bit disconcerting on a busy day when thongs of people crowd into the elevator, each in a hurry to get to their various destinations. When you're in such close quarters with people you see on a daily basis, it's important to show a little consideration for your fellow riders. Here are some rules of elevator etiquette that'll make you a pleasure to ride with:
Elevator etiquette: Put away the cell phone
There's nothing more irritating than an oblivious person stepping onto the elevator in the midst of an animated and usually meaningless cell phone conversation. Not only is it a distraction to the other people in the elevator, you're also hitting them with your cell phone waves. After all, the verdict's still out on the safety of cell phones. Plus, do you really want the other riders to be privy to your private conversations? Avoid this kind of problem by finishing your conversation before boarding the elevator.
Elevator etiquette: Skip the theatrics and attention seeking behavior
Even if you love being the center of attention, don't use an elevator ride to draw attention to yourself. This is not the time to try to impress everyone by announcing that you just purchased a Rolls Royce or received a handwritten note from President elect Obama. Most people are a little uncomfortable in a crowded elevator and appreciate quiet conversation or none at all. Also resist the urge to break out in song in the hopes that you may be discovered by a talent agent making the trip up to the twentieth floor. Save the singing for the shower at home.
Elevator etiquette: Don't talk about personal issues
A crowded elevator isn't the place to discuss personal issues. Not only will you make the people around you uncomfortable, but you can never be sure who else on the elevator is listening in. If you work in a building with a strong social network, you may soon find your personal information is not so private anymore.
Elevator etiquette: Don't spread your germs
If you're ill, particularly if you're coughing, sneezing, or running a fever, take the stairs. Imagine how easily a virus can be spread within the confines of an enclosed compartment like an elevator. If you work on the fiftieth floor and don't have the energy to take the stairs, at least wait until you can board an empty elevator.
Elevator etiquette: Don't use the elevator as your dining car
Wouldn't you find it a bit annoying if someone were to get on the elevator eating a big sloppy hot dog piled high with pungent smelling onions? Even if you're pressed for time, do yourself and the people in the elevator a favor by finishing your lunch before boarding.
Elevator etiquette: Don't subject others to your displays of affection
You may love your spouse or partner but other people in the elevator may not be entertained by your displays of affection. Resist the urge to kiss, embrace, or whisper sweet nothings during an elevator ride. Even if you don't embarrass easily, the people around will likely be plenty embarrassed for you.
Why not follow some of these simple rules of elevator etiquette and make the ride more pleasant for everyone?
