English Structures: Subject--Verb Agreement

In sentence constructions, there must be agreement between
the verb and its subject. The concept of verbal agreement is at
the root of sound grammatical construction. The student who
wants to write good sentences and earn high marks in his Eng-
lish Language studies must acqaint himself with the workings
of verbal agreement. In addition to the definition above, the
rule states further that there must be agreement in number and
person, that is the verb must agree with its subject in number
and person.
Examples:
1.John 'wants' to work.
2.They 'read' their books every day.
3.I 'wish' I were you.
4.She 'reads'her book regularly.
5.He 'does'not agree with me.
In number 1 John is in the third person singular and the
verb 'wants' agrees accordingly. If 'want' is used it becomes
bad grammar. In number 2 the plural verb'read' is used to agree
with 'they'.But in number 3 'reads' is used to agree with the
singular pronoun 'she'.
