The writers guild strike has taken a dramatic turn of events with NBC firing the entire production staff of the "Saturday Night Live" SNL show.

Maybe not all that dramatic

I think that article is being a bit sensationalistic. They call it "fired," but maybe a more accurate term would be "laid off." SNL is completely live and scripted, so with no writers, there's nothing for the staff to work on (unlike variety shows that may have some scripted parts, some music performances, some taped segments or interviews, etc). When the strike is settled, those people will probably all be hired back.
