"Evade" (Written September 14, 2003)

In a tree, within a quiet forest, sits a young boy, his face shows signs of peaceful thoughts.

He is enjoying the silence, but then a cry. Dogs are barking not far from where the boy is perched.

With a quick glance in the direction of the sounds, the boy leaps from the tree. Now on the leaf-covered ground, he darts away from the disturbance.

Another cry and the dogs are following the boy. They are quick behind him, and it isn't long before he can hear the footsteps being pulled by the leashes.

Before the running boy is a cliff, not twenty feet away. In an instant, it is upon him, and he flies from the edge without a moment's hesitation.

More cries, this time followed by human voices. They are in awe of what the boy did. It isn't long before the men lead their dogs away, having decided that their pray has evaded them. And by giving his own life, no less.

Once they are some distance away, the boy emerges from the water, looking up at the cliff, which towers above. He swims to the shore, and walks away having evaded capture once again. His face shows signs of peaceful thoughts.
